COUGAR WOMEN ADVANCE, MEN BOW OUT

REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina’s women’s basketball team defeated Calgary by a 65-59 score on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport to complete a two-game sweep over the Dinos in this best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series.
The Cougars led by double digits for most of the second half until Calgary scored six consecutive points in the fourth quarter to get to within five with just over three minutes left. The Dinos kept it close and made it a one-possession game on an Emma Nieuwenhuizen three-pointer with a minute to go, but those turned out to be Calgary’s final points of the game and Kehlsie Crone sealed the win with five late free throws for the Cougars.
“I thought we were pretty solid defensively all weekend, especially rebounding the ball which was critical for us,” Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. “We made some shots and free throws down the stretch when we needed to. It was nice to be able to get it done in two games so we can have tomorrow off, as do all the other teams heading into next weekend.”
Regina now moves on to the Canada West Final Four to be hosted next weekend by the University of Saskatchewan. The Cougars will face MacEwan in the opening game on Friday, while Alberta and the host Huskies will square off in the other semifinal game.
“MacEwan is a veteran team with very good post players and their starting five is as good as anyone’s in Canada West,” Taylor said. “They’re a well-coached team and a real tough matchup for us.”

Meanwhile the Cougar Mens team lost 86-73 to the Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack Saturday in Kamloops in Game 3 of the Best-of-3 Canada West Quarterfinal.
That concludes the season for Steve Burrows’ Cougars, whose home playoff series win last weekend versus Winnipeg was the first home series for the program since 2008.

The mens program is in serious shape it appears. 8 years between home playoff series seems to suggest a lot of defects with the program. It's too bad Cougar athletics have a hard time making the grade and succeeding as champions. I know of a lot of athletes who have gone elsewhere in order to have access to superior programs. Something really needs to be done.
^^^^ Excuse me?! The mens basketball team just completed one of its better seasons in recent memory. Steve Burrows has taken hold of that program and has made it better in his short time as HC. The future looks very bright for the mens team. It will be nice to see both teams competing for conference and national championships in upcoming years.

Many athletes have been lost to other programs and many stay in the city where they graduate…. where their contacts and friends are. We have been losing many of the best and brightest. Exactly what Brad Wall has been working on changing. We need to keep that talent here!
Clearly there are leadership problems at the U of R and specifically within the Athletic Department. Lots of excuses……little action.
Stakeholders at the U of R…..those providing financial support ….should demand much more. Results!

Steve Burrows has done an incredible job. In his first year, he was starting from scratch and had no chance at a recruiting class because he was hired in the late Spring. Last year, he has his team competing on most nights and winning against some very good teams. This year, he not only gets his team in the playoffs (first time the men's team has been there in 8 years), but he wins a playoff round and takes a darn good team to the full three games on the road. To those complaining about Todd Johnson, I give you this. There are a lot of good WHL grads out there, but those grads go to the U of S, the U of C, the U of A or Mount Royal. Why? Money! The Cougar hockey program doesn't have the money for scholarships that the other schools have. The same could be said for other programs. This is where alumni and fundraising proves to be huge. If funding is a problem for the Hockey Program, then shame on the Board of Governors at the U of R. It is their job to keep the programalive and competitive with other programs. Start there. No matter what the university mission statements say, one of the core functions of universities with sports is to win….and do that respectably.The benefits of doing this are well documented.
