DAYTONA HOMES (TUESDAY) MORNING GOALIE
A DOZEN FINAL GREY CUP THOUGHTS
1 – As Grey Cups go, the 2014 edition in Vancouver was good but not great. Anybody will tell you that. And it certainly wasn’t 2014 Grey Cup General Manager Jamie Pitblado’s fault that the match-up was a dog; Calgary vs Hamilton.
There were tens of thousands of people at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the parties and at B.C. Place for the game but for the most part outside of that, there wasn’t a whole lot of evidence of the game. But who minds? It’s the exact same way in Toronto. Everyone in Vancouver had a good time, except for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and that’s all the counts.
2 – Which, of course, leads to “The Call”. Nobody outside of Hamilton thinks the Illegal Block penalty on the Tiger-Cats’ Taylor Reed in the final minute was a bad call. Kent Austin was upset after the game, but that’s not surprising.
I left the game at halftime with Luc Mullinder to watch the game in the hotel lounge and Luc was a literal quote machine when Brandon Banks’ game-winning punt return touchdown was called back on that penalty. “That call is 30% as painful as the 13th Man,” Luc noted. “That guy should be glad he doesn’t play for Saskatchewan.”
3 – “The Call” will be debated for years but minutes after the game it was debated correctly by the TSN panel. The infraction didn’t affect the play but it was within five yards of the ball-carrier and if the ref hadn’t called it, he might have been fired. The fact is it appeared as the Calgary’s Karl McCartney overshot Banks, and wouldn’t have been able to tackle him anyways.
4 – Que Sera, Sera. We’ve been there and bought the T-shirt. We still feel bad for Hamilton, because they were good enough to win the game over 60 minutes. I wanted Calgary to lose more than the Ticats to win but I particularly felt bad for Andy Fantuz. He’s 1-4 in Grey Cups and now experienced both the 13th Man and The Call.
I also ran into Andy’s father Max Saturday evening at Riderville and he thanked me for all the nice things I’ve said and done for Andy over the years. Class people. Those things mean the world to me.
Speaking of Riderville, it’s come a long way from when I was hosting it a over a decade ago when we had just a few hundred people in a hotel ballroom. Luc tells me 7800 people passed through the doors on Saturday in Vancouver. A fan of another team remarked, “There’s too much green.” I thought that’s exactly what we want!
5 – It was colder in Vancouver on Grey Cup Sunday in 2014 (minus-3) then it was in Regina for Grey Cup Sunday in 2013 (plus-2). Given what you might have been suffering through at home, I can hardly complain but it seemed frigid in downtown Vancouver. I really felt sorry for the homeless people. The coldest Lower Mainland people have ever felt in their lives, so they tell me, is minus-10. So ya, it was Huddle Up In Vancouver.
6 – Imagine Dragons at halftime? They seemed okay. Clearly they’re not my thing. However the way the stage was configured, half of the stadium couldn’t see them and weren’t happy about it. That’s something to consider for 2015 in Winnipeg.
7 – Regarding the news of the Roughrider coaching potential changes, the team is saying nothing. Sportsnet’s Arash Madani reported on Saturday that George Cortez will not return as Offensive Coordinator and when I asked him the next day how confident he is in his source, Arash said “very”. A CFL assistant coach told Carm Carteri about it on Friday but I wasn’t touching the story.
8 – Regarding the possible dismissal of Richie Hall and Barron Miles – as reported by TSN’s Dave Naylor – that hasn’t been confirmed by the team either. There may be an announcement this week, or perhaps not for weeks on any possible changes. As I said, the team isn’t confirming nor denying anything.
9 – Danny Barrett is scheduled to interview for the B.C. Lions’ vacant head coaching job.
10 – There are a couple of rumours about who the next Commissioner of the CFL will be. The guy from San Diego who works for the Chargers and is originally from Winnipeg has apparently pulled his name. The other two names we’re hearing are TSN’s Jock Climie and Toronto sports executive Tom Anselmi. It appears replacing Mark Cohon is no easy task.
11 – It was very strange being at a Grey Cup without the Roughriders being in it. You think I’d be used to it since it was my 14th Grey Cup but since the Riders have been in four since 2007, I felt pretty much useless particularly after how hectic 2013 was. It’s got me questioning whether to attend Winnipeg in 2015 or not. Long ago Rider staff said to me, “Unless we’re in it, I don’t want to go”, and now I see why.
12 – As Carm Carteri pointed out on the flight home, this will be a very interesting and active off-season in the CFL. The Riders will be front and centre with their coaching news, then free agents plus the announcement of a new President and the CFL’s search for a Commissioner. That means the SportsCage will be busy with Rider talk.
I met SO many Rider fans from all across the country who listen to the SportsCage over the internet on their computer or on an app on their smartphone and they’re tuning in for Rider coverage.
So we’ll give it to them!

A few things: 1) The Call – as bad as it was, is not the reason the Ti-Cats lost the Grey Cup. I do wish that with a US TV audience the game would have ended on that Special Teams play, but the bottom line was it was a selfish play on the part of the Hamilton player that when it's on the line to take a penalty that bad. They started to slow, couldn't score in the Red Zone and Bo Levi Mitchell basically cemented himself as the next version of Ricky Ray in this league. 2) The Roughriders… Read more »
It wasnt just the kicking on special teams it was the tackling giving up huge plays that cost us games i think dyce should go
Lol…"As Grey Cups go, the 2014 edition in Vancouver was good but not great. Anybody will tell you that." First person I have heard say that, but not surprised it's from you. I guess when it's not completely green it isn't good. The comment I heard the mosteoporosis was thank god it was a normal Grey Cup again. The parties were fantastic, the parade was outstanding and so was the weather. Don't worry Winnipeg you will do just fine whether Rod is there or not. Who leaves a Grey Cup game at half time???
I'm sure it was Hamilton's 13th man play! For me it was a lose-lose situation.Having Cornish,Lewis and the rest of the derelicts vs flaky fantuz(don't worry rider nation, this is just a process),remember the u-tube videos?,Austin(0-2),looks gr8 on him, winnin the cup.Me thinks, Kent the "great",gave up a year too soon on HENRY,…seems like Collaros the weak link in the chain!
Thank you Rod! You do a super job of keeping us Rider fans informed and interested. Between your daily radio show … the Huddle … and this blog … we are lucky to have such good coverage throughout the season. (I know others are envious) But most of all its your passion and openess I appreciate. Thanks again.
one could argue the 102nd grey cup was better than the 101st.
Bigger crowd, closer game … if your not a Rider fan last years game was dreadful.
People choose to says it wasn't that great because they had no emotional attachment. And i thought imagine dragons were really good.
I want to second Lyle Pederson,
The day this Blog shuts down or the Host ever leaves The SportsCage – that will be a very sad day indeed.
You left the game at half time??? Remember that next time you have a craving to cuss on people for not showing up at Mosiac.
Could Glen Suitor be the next Rider President?
The 102 Grey Cup was outstanding so where people are saying it wasn't I am confused. The game came down to the last play. Was it a classic like 1989 or 2005? No, but if Hamilton wins on that kick return this game is then one for the ages. I don't like Calgary, but I do admire excellence. The 2014 Stampeders are an all time great team. I need to think on it more, but a case could be made they were as dominant as Flutie's '96-'97 Argos, but not quite at the level of the '95 Stallions. They went… Read more »
I don't think Wally is stupid enough to hire Danny. But I sure hope he does.
The penalty was symbolic of the whole 2014 year for all CFL teams; I hate to say,it was a lousy season. The referees dominated this season with their presence, so many plays were called back that there was no surprise that the Refs again ruined a perfect ending to what would have been an amazing ending to a game. If a call is 50/50 then leave the flag off the field. ——-Let's compare… Watch any NFL or NCAA game, very rarely are their holding penalties or referee dominated games. In fact, I don't remember it. Here in Canada, game after… Read more »
Note to kick return blockers: if the guy you are blocking can't make the tackle don't push him in the back!! In fact, don't ever push someone in the back! Get and maintain body position on the player you are blocking. It is the players committing the fouls not the refs.
That infraction was absolutely blatant.
Hey Mitchell Blair,
I hope you never permanently host any talk show. Your constantly cutting people off is hard to listen to. Unless you are going to host a one-man radio show, please give it up!!!
Speaking of Danny Barrett – I happened to take out a DVD from the Regina Library (via inter-library loan) called "Pride of the Ride" which came out 10 years ago. It contains hat classic rap video "11 Years is Enough"! Want to see a young Danny and Roy, a chubby John Lynch in Frenzy mode and a young Tom Sheppard, and Leonard the Gopher (whatever happened to that guy) and more check it out. One thing that stands out is how few if any people in the stands used to wear Rider jerseys to the game. Not much green on… Read more »
RP said, "The infraction didn't affect the play". Well I guess that means that one of the most exciting Grey Cup plays ever, will never count! Fact: That great play that got the fans out of their seats and with millions watching (North and South of the border) was called back because of a debatable infraction, one that "didn't affect the play". In Canadian Football do we value erring on the side of caution or erring on the side of excitement? If it is about entertainment, then unless it is blatant, please leave the flag in your pocket. ——–If ESPN… Read more »
Offence being down this year is a direct result of video review of pass interference. Because it can be reviewed the officials are not making the calls and leaving it up to the coaches to challenge.
When challenged, obvious pass interference is not being called. The "not enough video evidence" B.S.
Because the non calls are not being overturned, DBs know they can get away with more interference. It has spiralled out of control.
This is a passing league and this year it has gotten a lot harder to mount a passing attack.
Get rid of the damn video review of pass interference!!!!!
Everybody is so full of praise for Cohon, well those refs that wrecked the entire 2014 season were under his watch.
Refs did NOT wreck the 2014 season in any way. This is just more fan B.S. Like "Ron Landcaster got run out of town". Fans grab onto it and it starts to become real in their minds even though there is no evidence to support it.
Hey Kel … it's up to the player not to make the infraction! Bottom line it was a penalty. It is the refs job to call it and he did. He threw the flag at the right time. You don't wait to see the result of the play for "excitement" then decide.
After the game one of the Stampeder players (think it was Cornish) said they "could beat anybody CFL or down south."
Stop! Just stop talking. You play in the minor leagues. Why can't you take your broken trophy and enjoy it for what it is.
The guy who should stop watching the CFL just won't go away. How can we help you to NEVER watch the CFL again?
Kel, Let me tell you where you go wrong in your opinion piece. I'm a CFL diehard so I'm going to watch 98% of the games anyway. Where the CFL screwed up started in Collective Bargaining. History shows when they go to a 9 team league the quality of play goes down due to the lack of Canadian talen. CFL is offense driven, and that is what the fans want. The ratio needs to go down from 7 to 5, or 7 to 6 and eventually to 5. Having the ratio at 5 will still mean the O and D… Read more »
Although I agree that the CFL refs did 'wreck' this season (and the Grey Cup), I would disagree with the comment that Cohon is responsible.
I will suggest that the man had much on his plate and has done quite well for the league. But to your point, I would also suggest this should be an issue to look into for the new commissionaire. Te ensure that the Refs are no longer ruining the game, literally taking the fans out of the game.
Benvides as DC book it.
