BISMARCK, North Dakota — Former Bismarck High and University of North Dakota football standout Weston Dressler says he’s not sure where he’ll be playing this year.

Dressler’s contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League is expiring, making the star receiver a free agent. He could re-sign with the team with which he’s starred the past six seasons, sign with another CFL team, or take a shot at the NFL, as some NFL teams have reportedly expressed interest, The Bismarck Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/18ZJ5Fu ).

Dressler, 28, said he hopes to decide on his future within a month or two.

“I’m not going to guarantee anything, but I’ve obviously enjoyed my time playing here and playing for this organization,” he said of the Roughriders, whom he helped lead to a Grey Cup championship this past season. “Really, I’m just waiting. I’m training and getting my body as healthy as I can right now.”

Dressler has enjoyed a successful career north of the border. He was the CFL’s rookie of the year in his first season in 2008. This past season he finished seventh in the league in receptions, sixth in receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns. It was the fifth time in six seasons he topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark.

Dressler said that bringing a Grey Cup to the fans was a crowning achievement. Saskatchewan beat Hamilton 45-23 in the championship game last November in Regina, Saskatchewan.

“(Fans) have been through a lot. The team has been around for 100-plus years, and they’ve only experienced four Grey Cup victories,” Dressler said. “To have a chance to bring one of those home for them, and do it on our home field, was pretty special.”

If I am hearing Dressler right, he accomplished his goals with the Riders and now it's time to look at other goals. Thing is, he is easier to replace than Sheets. Hopefully he'll be back, because if he shows up in another CFL jersey, he'll be booed like the rest of the turn coats. Seriously, why would he want to play anywhere else in the CFL? Please answer that question.

Sounds like he is being a human and will pursue the best option for him.

I'm hearing that he's sick and tired of the "thugs" in the dressing room.
Back to the old Shivers and Barrett ways in regards to what type of players "run" this team.

Wow. What part of that interview would lead anyone to assume Dressler does not want to be a Rider? He's going to try the NFL and only said he won't guarantee anything about where he'll play and has enjoyed his time as a Rider. Don't get too uptight people.

To the second anon; I disagree, Sheets is already replaced, that's why they signed Chris Garrett. With the current O-line either one is big time. It would be a long term project replacing the chemistry between DD and Weston.

Can you Idiots from Saskatchewan not hear the future announcement Dressler signs with the Ottawa Rough Riders, oops, Ottawa REDBLACKS. Saskatchewan's gm and the coaching staff have chosen their direction with the likes of Loud Mouth Anderson (LMA) and his Dewdney Ave posse. Why should Weston Dressler be loyal to anyone but himself, he doesn't owe the Roughriders anything, mission accomplished, last year's Grey Cup championship. That's the way professional sports plays, " he's a free agent to anyone Interested In his highly sought after playing services, " and money talks.

Sorry Cuss but Garret had one good game against a suspect D. Sheets ripped up the league all year long when healthy and DD himself said he was a key to his own success. Not saying Dress is not good, just receivers are easier to find than top flight running backs for this league, and Sheets is as good as we've seen for a while. How many Dressler types in the league, a lot more than Sheets types.

Hey Roddy, you're from
Saskatchewan, do you consider yourself an idiot? Nice that you allow insults of our character and homeland. Grounds for removal IMO.

Man are the chicken-littles of the world ever exhausting! "Sounds like he won't be in Saskatchewan even if he stays in the CFL!" Drama queens. Also, what's with this "money talks" stuff? You don't think the Riders have money?? It's a capped era. The salary range for a player of his caliber is essentially set. If we offer him a fair market value contract then nobody's going to be outbidding us by $50K for a slotback. It's just not gonna happen. The money he'll get here is going to be basically the same money he'll get elsewhere. So if he… Read more »

Man I wish people would stop speculating about dressler already and just let things play out! Clearly he wants a crack at the NFL and he deserves one! Whether or not he's back here if the NFL doesn't work out is out of everyone's control! And don't pretend to know what he's planning on doing or what team he's going to, etc.

Absolutely agree….and as for anybody on here from Riderville calling ANY Rider (past/future/present) a thug or part of a posse, they should look in the mirror!! There are fans just as bad, as some comments have proven my point 🙂 Yes I am a proud Rider fan! WE R THE CHAMPS 😉

I hate to see the little guy leave as he has been a great player and ambassador for the Riders but this just looks all too familiar. His words seem scary to me and almost sound like he is gone. I hope my gut feeling is wrong.
