DURANT CONTRACT TALKS GO SIDEWAYS

Durant on Sunday

REGINA – Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant expressed disappointment and uncertainty over stalled contract talks between him and the team as his Saskatchewan teammates emptied their lockers to close out a dull 2016 season.

“I think right now it’s pretty much at a stand still,” Durant told a throng of reporters surrounding his locker Sunday morning.

The 34-year-old is set to become a free agent in February if he and the Roughriders don’t come to a new deal that keeps him in Regina.

“I think we’ve presented an offer that we feel is more than reasonable, and it’s up to the team to accept it,” he said. “I took a pay cut this year coming in. I’m willing to take another pay cut. I feel like I’ve done my part.”

Durant’s dejection Sunday was a marked change from late September, when both he and general manager Chris Jones spoke optimistically about signing a new contract.

“Of course I thought there was an opportunity, but you know, I guess with them rejecting that, of course I have no choice but to think that it may go in a different direction,” Durant said.

Chris Jones wasn’t available for comment on Sunday, instead he’s set to hold a year-end news conference Monday morning.

Reflecting on a season where the Riders went 5-13 – two wins better than 2015 – Durant said the team was “unable to build the type of chemistry we needed to be successful.”

That was due in part to a constantly changing roster, a symptom of several injuries that kept experienced starters sidelined for most or all of 2016.

That required Jones and Riders’ brass to constantly bring in new players and to contend with roster ratios for Canadian and international starters.

“It was hard not being on the field this year. I worked really hard this off-season to get as strong as I could, as fast as I could to contribute. And then unfortunately I got hurt during training camp,” said Canadian guard Chris Best.

This year was the 33-year-old’s tenth season in the CFL, all of them in Saskatchewan.

The absence of Best and fellow offensive line veteran Brendon Labatte showed: the Roughriders were second-worst in the league in sacks allowed (57). Montreal allowed a league-worst 64.

Best and Labatte are signed through next year, now among the older players on the team.

The elder Best said he hopes Durant remains with team, too.

“I hope he’s here, because that’s my QB. But this is a business and there’s going to be changes; there are every single year in pro football,” he said.

Another veteran player returning next season is receiver Rob Bagg, who noted that he and Durant are friends off the field.

“I just tell him to remain positive and keep the faith, and everything will work out the way it’s supposed to work out,” Bagg said of Durant’s stalled contract talks. “I believe any team would be lucky to have him. I hope obviously he’s back here.”

One of the few bright spots of 2016 was the play of receiver Naaman Roosevelt.

Before a season-ending leg injury during the Banjo Bowl, the second-year receiver was on pace to shatter several Roughriders receiving records. In the 11 games he played, Roosevelt amassed 1,095 receiving yards on 76 receptions.

On Nov. 3, the 28-year-old signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him with the Riders through 2018.

He said he’s excited about playing in a new Mosaic Stadium and he wants to match this year’s production levels.

As for Durant, he said there were some positives to 2016.

“We got a couple wins and went on a winning streak there. I think it showed the younger guys that with the patience and if they put in the work, good things will happen,” he said.

I thought Brandon Bridge looked pretty good. As well, I think that Mitchel Gail could be brought along but we don't give our backups any real time experience … just my opinion

If $350K seems high to you then you know absolutely nothing about quarterbacks or typical CFL pay ranges or both!

He a top tier QB. Reilly and Ricky Rae are paid right around 500K. Colarps in Hamilton and Burris and fellow QB are both paid right around $400K. Bo Levi is supposedly taking $350 but if he wins the Grey Cup this year it will bounce up to 500K even Willy is getting paid 400K
So how can you say 350K is too much?
Obviously you haven't done any research and your just blabbing stupid stuff that makes no sense.

Chee, Darian is a bargain at $350k per year. Is it possible that Jones has somebody else in mind. His boy in Edmonton, the perfect qb in his mindset, is under contract. Darian has choices in free agency. The ALS and the Argos need a qb, no other team does, well we do if he is not here. This stinks just like Burris and Shivers not so long ago. ☹️️

I think the Als have their QB and he's a lot cheaper than Durant.

The ALS have a QB that runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. He won 2 games. Whoop de doo. He doesn't stay in the pocket and runs if his 1st read is covered. He nothing more than Nealone Green 2.0
He won't get through 5 games before getting replaced next season

This is a player that is willing to take yet another pay cut for the team he loves. Yes he's 34 and has had injuries the last few years but he can still play at a high level and his team plays for him if that's not a true leader I'm not sure what is.

I wish DD all the best when goes elsewhere. He is still a top tier qb and Jones doesn't want to pay him like one. He would get killed behind the worst o-line in sk rider recent history and deserve better.

After 1 entire season coach Jones has proven to be completely overrated as a coach. Look carefully and see the facts. Awful pre snap penalties right to game 18. That is BAD coaching.

Get it done Riders your options don't look too good. And if we lose another player in the lines of Chick & Dressler….Chris Jones will be run out of town with Craig Reynolds right behind him.

Dont stupe to managements low balling level Darian, your worth way more.
Unless there is a way better offensive line and better offensive coaching, just take your chances somewhere else.
Your always respected here in Saskatchewan, your a class act.
2017 is another miss playoffs year, with or without you, too many holes to fill.

No other reason to think this than my "spidey senses" but I've never gotten the feeling Jones was 100% on board with DD, despite certain things he claimed in the media. I hope I'm wrong. Love Doubles.

Maybe Jones should supliment the difference in wage negotiations from his own stash. It also wouldn't hurt to do SOMETHING that the fans want, and this devoted player deserves. Without fans, no football.

We went many years being so cheap with our money that it was years and years and years before we began to see a better team. Are we going to go down that long dark road again where we need to hold telethons in order to survive? We have in seven years been to the Grey Cup three times. Yes it's a rebuild year but the one constant has to be the quarterback. Give the man his money so we can deal with the other issues that need to be addressed.

The money seems reasonable but it may be the length of the deal that is a problem. DD wasn't the Durant of old this year. He was very ineffective in the first half of many games, which makes a person wonder if he is still suffering some lingering effects of not playing for two years. I don't assume Travis Lulay is making any more $ than 350K and his situation is very similar being injury prone. QB's have a shelf life especially if they're injury prone i.e. Ricky Ray. It's just age and life catches up. I hope DD returns… Read more »

of course DD wasn't the "Durant of old" this year…he had no stable line of receivers, wasn't protected at the line, far far too many "tryouts" and he never had a chance to get comfortable with anyone. His regular receivers, if they weren't injured, also never had a chance this year. Yes, there were way way too many stupid penalties but the entire team was never given a chance to become a "team", never knew from one game to the next who was going to be playing and where. Yes, I am hoping DD signs an extension but IMO, if… Read more »

Maybe he wasn't the DD we were used to, but the only receiver that he had worked with previously was Bagg. Had a training camp and part of one game with Demski, Roosevelt only in training camp. He played the whole year behind the most porous OL and was the most sacked QB. How many throw aways were there in order to not get sacked. How many running backs did we use plus 21 different receivers. Look at DD's number compared to Reilly, BLM, or Jennings and you know what its a miracle he put up the numbers he did.… Read more »

DD wasn't the problem this year…everything else was.. Most caused by Chris Jones. Now he's low balling the star quarterback…he must know someone in the U.S is wanting to come up?

Think of all the money we would have for DD if it wasn't for all of Jones' "mistakes" this past season. How much did those cost us? Jones didn't seem to be bothered about spending that money! Get DD signed – sooner rather than later! Rider Nation has had enough.

Don't play hardball with DD. It will set this franchise back even further. Reynolds better step in pronto!

Heck, if DD isn't our QB going into the new stadium, not only will he be crushed, A LOT of Rider fans will be crushed also. Haven't been happy with the Jones and crew this season. Not re-signing DD will not help.

Is this really a surprise. DD is not the DD of old. Time and injuries have caught up to him. Gale and Bridge dont look that bad. While I think we all love the guy, father time and in his case injuries have caught up to all pro players.

Man you posted the same comments as another poster who knows very little about the QB position. Wake up … Darian had no O-line this year. He had receivers that didn't even know what a waggle was little loan run one. He never had the same running back more than 2 games. Give your head a shake. Darian was basically running for his life on every play. It's just so infuriating when ridiculous comments come out and try and blame age or injury because they have no idea what they are talking about. Look at Montreal since they lost Calvillo.… Read more »

Well I think that Chris Jones should think about his career as currently Dd is your best chance at winning as you cut everyone that was a Rider tgat won. I think he is the second worst coach ever in club history behind Chamberlin. For a defensive coach you were horrible and if hands weren't tied by Chamberlain and previous GM contracts you would be worried about you being here next year. You have taken a everyday sell our team back to no knowing anyone on the team as you revolving door of players, poor record and your horrible defense.… Read more »
