DURANT DONE FOR THE YEAR

REGINA (CP) – The defending Grey Cup champions have lost their star quarterback for the rest of the regular season and his status for the CFL playoffs is also in question.

Saskatchewan’s Darian Durant is expected to miss the rest of the Roughriders’ season with a torn tendon in his right elbow.

The 32-year-old, who will undergo surgery in the next couple days to repair the injury, was added to the team’s six-game injury list Tuesday.

“Realistically his regular season is probably done,” said general manager Brendan Taman. “Whether or not we can get him back for the playoffs, we’ll see. It’s not the greatest of outlooks.”

Durant suffered the injury during the third quarter of Sunday’s 30-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

He was attempting a pass when he was hit by Winnipeg defensive end Bryant Turner. Durant’s throwing arm was bent awkwardly on the play.

The star quarterback dropped to the turf in considerable pain before he was helped to the locker-room. He did not return to the game.

Taman said he doesn’t believe the injury to be career-threatening.

“We expect him back next year for sure,” he said.

The injury is a huge blow to the defending Grey Cup champions, who are 8-and-2 and second in the West Division with eight games left in the regular-season. Backup quarterback Tino Sunseri now moves into the starting job.

“He’s our starting quarterback so it’s a blow, no doubt,” Taman said of Durant. “We have a lot of faith in Tino.”

Sunseri relieved the injured Durant and helped the Riders hang on for Sunday’s win, the team’s seventh straight. Taman said he expects Seth Doege to move up on the depth chart and that the Riders are targeting former Washington Huskies pivot Keith Price, who was released by the Seahawks in June. When asked if the team would be targeting a CFL veteran, Taman said the pickings were slim.

“We’ve had that thought, that list isn’t very long,” he said.

Sunseri has seen limited playing time this season as a reserve. He filled in for Durant when the starter was knocked out of an Aug. 24 game versus the B.C. Lions with a right hand injury.

“He’s very sharp,” said Taman. “He’s always thinking about football. He comes from a football family. He’s very confident, which you need in a quarterback.”

“When we get Darian involved with it too they’ll be fine mentally,” he added.

Durant tweeted Tuesday that he knows Sunseri will “get the job done.”

“I assure u I will be 100% ready for the 2015 season,” Durant tweeted. “I will be right by Tino’s side as we continue our journey to the 2014 Grey Cup.”

Sunseri, in his second year with the Riders, is 13-for-25 passing this season for 152 yards and one touchdown.

Durant has completed 128 of 228 pass attempts this season, for 1,792 yards and eight touchdowns.

Taman said Durant has dealt with the news like a pro.

“He took it pretty well,” he said. “He just wants to get it over with and move on.”

Who will be our Kurt Warner? The Rams won a Super Bowl after starter Trent Green was injured. Season's not over yet.

Sucks but that's the way it is. Get better Darian and we'll see you next year. Time to see how Tino does. He has done okay in two of the more hostile environments in BC and Wpg thus far. (his BC stats would have looked excellent if Bagg had caught the big ball)

Hopefully we can hang in there and get him some experience against Hamilton and Ottawa before we face the big boys in the final third.

I would like to know what if any responsibility the C.F.L. head of officiating takes as a result of his officiating crew in Sunday's game allowing the play to continue even after it was blown dead. Riders lose their # 1 Q.B. and the league loses one of its stars.

Well last year was Celebration in Rider Nation, this year it is Devastation in Rider Nation. And just after we got back Dressler. Here's hoping Sunseri can mature quickly and play well like Bo Levi in Calgary. Defence wins championship and if we do win it this year, likely on the shoulders of the Defence.

Wish DD the best and speedy recovery. Have confidence in Tino as he will get better with more experience, he is calm and poised out there, thanks that we have a strong running game, but Tino will get sacked more as he is not the same as DD in the collapsed pocket.

Should have we not offered Willy more money and kept him as backup?

Now if we lose in the playoffs we can always use the popular '07 quote, " had Durant not torn his elbow…."

Who comes in as insurance? We need 3 QBs on the roster.

We had Weber for training camp. Not a lot of guys out there with experience — I see Steven Jyles and Justin Goltz are free agents and Adrian McPherson is 'retired' while dealing with injury.

Jason Boltus has some CFL experience but is in the AFL right now.

Well the good news is that if a rookie QB was ever going to win a Grey Cup this would be the team to do it with!

Absolute bs. Stupid league and they're joke refs/sandwich artists. If there was a procedure on the play then waddle your walrus butt out there and blow the whistle a little harder. Wtf is the point of having these loud stadiums if players can't hear the so called officials.

This is the grimmest news possible! We get Dressler back and then our leader and star is gone for the year. No Grey Cup in 2014. So sad, so sad. Well, it looks that, as with the crops, we in Saskatchewan are once again into Next Year Country.

Hope you get better soon Darian!

To the league, how you cannot protect him on a dead play is beyond careless. The abuse he takes on the field is absurd.

This might not be such a horrible thing, Tino is good enough to win games for us, Cortez will make sure of that. I'm sure we won't be "as good" without Darian but we should be good enough to say finish 4th in the West for an East Crossover 😉
