ETCHEVERRY TO WINNIPEG

Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press is reporting Gary Etcheverry will be named defensive coordinator of Mike O’Shea’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Etcheverry won a Grey Cup in 1997 while on Don Mathews’ Toronto Argonauts staff and was Saskatchewan’s defensive coordinator for their Grey Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010. He also served as Rider D.C. in 2000 and is a former head coach of the Argonauts.

Lawless further reports Etcheverry will hire Nelson Martin, another former Rider assistant, as Winnipeg’s defensive backs coach for 2014.

Already named to O’Shea’s staff are offensive coordinator Marcel Bellefeuille and special teams coordinator Pat Tracey.

lol. Winnipeg's team is going to be hilarious and awesome.

If Sheets is back next year, he's going to run for about 400 yds over Labour Day/Banjo Bowl

If you have the talent then it's a traditional defense. Etch is the guy you bring in when you have to do it unconventional. There is flat out no talent on that team, so he'll come up with some type of scheme to hold them in.

This is actually worse than the roster he had in Ottawa way back when. He'll either do well, or he's gone after a season.

Bomber fans are beaking on here now? What do you even say to them? It's like your baby brother trying to talk smack. No matter what, you're not threatened and mostly find it funny.

I've got a feeling that it's the same idiot poster that comes on here and trash talks the Riders while pumping up other teams with posts that make absolutely no sense. Like Edmonton and Winnipeg are going to be tops in the West this year. Riiiiiight. Some people have way too much time on their hands. The only thing Peg has that Regina/Stoon needs is a Hooters. It's high time that the legend sets up shop in our two great cities. Rod I know you'll agree with me on this one. Get a hold of your friend from Fargo that… Read more »

Etch was dco for two grey cups. Great coach. Needs innovative and fun players to succeed. Great coach with a motivated crew. Great human.

If this is accurate, I will miss the insight in Etch's weekly columns! I'm a little surprised he found another CFL gig after not pulling punches all season long.

Glad he found another job back in the league. Despite the criticism he took here, his D got us to 2 Grey Cup finals. Wish him luck in the 'Peg, except against us.
