FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN: VANSTONE, GURLEY & A MONSOON!

Fridays are reserved for football on the RP Show and we tackled all the week’s latest gridiron news on Episode #761, plus battled severely inclement weather! Here’s the rundown:

  • RP and Moose Dupont kicked things off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Thursday NHL leftovers including Florida’s implosion against Tampa Bay, 2) Inside the CFL’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement, 3) Is Nick Saban a narcissist?, 4) Rory McIlroy leads after Day 1 of the PGA Championship, 5) Junior hockey weekend lookahead including the Centennial Cup presented by Tim Hortons in Estevan and Game 1 in the WHL Conference Finals, and 6) Other weekend sports including NLL, CPL and next week’s start of the CEBL season.
  • The topic came up on Miami sports radio Friday morning that the CFL is the only pro football league “not named NFL” which has enjoyed sustained success. Rod wondered aloud why that is, and settled on the CFL’s uniqueness. Moose contends it’s because of the league’s consistency. Viewers chimed in with their thoughts and opinions throughout the whole show.
  • Leader Post columnist Rob Vanstone joined the show to discuss the CFL’s new CBA, the “Naturalized Canadian” clause, training camp news and all other CFL-related items. The discussion also spawned into who’s the greatest Roughrider back-up QB of all-time? That drew several opinions from viewers as well.
  • In Hour 2 a massive storm rolled into Rod’s location in South Florida and it threatened to knock the show off the air (eventually it did). It became a major safety concern. One viewer asked Rod which was more stressful: Friday’s show conditions or the infamous Blackout Game in August of 2007 between the Riders and Eskimos at Taylor Field? The host said definitely Friday’s show because he was never concerned about his safety during the blackout in 2007.
  • RP Show NFL Insider Tori Gurley joined the show from South Carolina and said this week’s war of words between Alabama’s Nick Saban and Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher over player recruiting was childish. Regarding the CFL’s longevity, Tori extolled the league’s virtues and explained that his time in the CFL changed his life, including meeting his future wife. Tori also predicted a Saskatchewan-Montreal Grey Cup this season.
  • The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: Who’s the Grey Cup favourite in the CFL East? At press time, Hamilton was leading.
  • Thursday’s Rockstar of the Day for RoxDar Supply Chain Solutions was Lanny McDonald. Friday’s was Rod for weathering the storm!
