FRIDAY COMMENTARY – ALL WILL BE WELL IF …

A coupla three or so thoughts heading into the weekend …

#1 – I care not what the math says. My gut tells me whoever wins tonight’s Saskatchewan/Calgary game at McMahon Stadium will claim the final playoff spot in the CFL West.

We don’t have time to get into all the specifics but put it this way – if the Riders lose, it’ll be their sixth in a row so you can forget about them winning next week’s regular season finale. A loss tonight would remove all doubt that they’re a broken bunch.

In the hayday, this game would’ve attracted a near sellout crowd so tonight’s attendance figure will provide a great indicator of where the CFL is at.

#2 – Speaking of, can’t believe the online furor over the Edmonton Elks’ decision this week to tarp off the top half of their stadium for CFL games next season.

Have you been paying attention? For the last few seasons the Elks could’ve played their games at the adjacent Clarke Stadium – where the junior teams play – due to poor attendance.

I’ve seen Roughriders practices with bigger crowds than Edmonton games. When attendance inevitably picks, they’ll open the upper deck (just like BC). End of story.

#3 – The NHL season is only three nights old and it’s already been a trip! I’ve got a million takeaways but one is how Winnipeg Jets fans weren’t nearly as upset as you’d expect after a 5-3 loss at Calgary in their openers on Wednesday.

The ’77 Canadiens wouldn’t have beaten the Flames that night.

All will be good if the Jets beat Florida in the home-opener on Saturday.

If only it was that easy.

Meanwhile you’ll have to forgive Connor Bedard if he’s got a case of PTSD. Two games into his NHL career, we’re seeing signs that he’s trapped in another cycle of “If Connor doesn’t score, nobody does.”

Fortunately, I know a good Recovery coach for that.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Can’t complain too much about the Jets performance. They played well and it was a tie until the Flames got a good bounce with barely a minute left. Shit happens, on to the next 81 games.

I would encourage all people to believe any and all online furror. This is where these people live and they create stories, narratives, gather consensus, and one village idiot emathizes with the next village idiot. Eventually someone gets appointed “The Historian” and this person will say how it was. You may actually get an Activist/Teacher grooming children to tell them, “Your parents are wrong, listen to the public education system…..in Regina no less.” Then the Provincial NDP comes along and absent of a pitchfork and red horns will say; “I feel your pain and we’ll take care of you.” Scott… Read more »

So the Elks are tarping in half of their stadium. What has Chris Jones done for you lately?
