FRIDAY COMMENTARY – FRIDAYS ARE FOR FOOTBALL

Fridays are for football and it’ll remain that way for as long as I have a sports talk show.

It started in 2010 when we launched the SportsCage and continued in 2019 when we began the RP Show which now covers TV, Radio, Streaming & Podcast.

The thing that jumps out at me most from the gridiron – aside from Thursday’s great NFL games on U.S. Thanksgiving – is the fact the Roughriders have begun filling out their coaching staff after torching their offensive coaches before Grey Cup.

I’m still a Rider fan, so the issue is front-of-mind. But I wonder, “What’s the rush?”

These things usually sit till late winter but my guess is with such a bitter taste in Rider fans mouths after the way last season ended, Sask wants to give their fans some confidence in where they’re headed.

TSN reported the Riders are beginning interviews for their offensive coordinator position and they plan to interview at least these three guys: Khari Jones, Marc Mueller and someone named Kelly Jeffery, who was the Riders running backs coach last year.

The Insiders tell me it’s Jeffery who’ll get the job for a variety of reasons, including the fact this outfit generally likes to promote from within.

And no matter how you slice it or want to present it, the GM & head coach are in lame duck positions, going into this season with only one year left on their deals. That doesn’t make their O.C. job what you’d call a “coveted position”.

They’ll find a fancy way to phrase the situation, but you can’t fudge the facts.

And still on the football front, I plan to be in Plantation, Florida tonight to take in the 5A Metro High School semifinal between Cardinal Gibbons and American Heritage.

The game is soldout.

They are the 16th– and 11th-ranked teams in all of USA High School Football and it was Cardinal Gibbons whom I addressed before their practice this week.

Man it feels good to be a part of something.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

It’s one thing to have a lame duck coach – Mike O’Shea comes to mind…..but everyone knows that guy is a Don Mathews disciple and can pick/choose his spots and he’s going to be back in Winnipeg. It is a completely different situation to be a lame duck GM. The last time that occured it was Roy Shivers. He sat all winter doing nothing, no free agents signed, and certainly nothing being added to the negotion list. Anyone who is resigned is not a person we had any threat of losing. When Macleod Bethel-Thompson says, “it starts at the top”… Read more »

This is all on the Board. It was the Board that decided on hiring Craig Reynolds and things have been pointing the wrong direction ever since.

Bang on!! As a general rule in life, accountants should not be allowed to run ANYTHING!!!

They are trained to count money……end if story.

Anyone remember the hiring of Chris Jones & Company, setting it up BEFORE Eskimos played the GC that year??

Cheating.

The GM and coach are in lame duck positions because they are lame ducks! What a brutal 2023 it’s going to be with those two again. Glad my money is not going to be paying for their salaries this year. Craig Reynolds needs to be fired ASAP for keeping that pair! What is wrong with him didn’t he watch any games this year? Didn’t he listen to coaches comments after the games? Totally mind boggling! We will be dead last in the CFL west this year as Chris Jones will have the Eskimos ahead of the Riders is my prediction.… Read more »
