FRIDAY COMMENTARY: GETTING OLD

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)

A coupla three or so thoughts headed into the weekend:

#1 – You’re going to be hearing a lot over the next week – from me anyway – about voting for Wolseley in this year’s Kraft Hockeyville contest.

It’s a crime that no Saskatchewan community has ever won the contest that awards a huge grant for facilities improvements, and an NHL preseason game to be played in their town in the fall.

I’m told Wolseley’s ice plant is the oldest in North America and the cost of a new one runs 700-thousand dollars. (I played there in the 1989 midget provincials. Have you ever skated on it?)

The voting begins one week from today but you’re asked to visit KraftHockeyville.ca to register to vote ahead of time.

Enough’s enough! I intend to devote all my resources to ending this drought and am counting on your support!

#2 – Speaking of hockey, it’s the 50thanniversary of the 1974 Regina Pats Memorial Cup championship and members of the team will be honoured at the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon.

There seems to be a mild debate over which Pats team is the greatest-ever, including 1980, 1984, 2017 or 2018. Obviously, I can’t speak about the 1950’s squads for which Bill Hicke starred.

But only one Pats team won the Memorial Cup in the “modern” era and it was that 1974 group.

End of discussion.

That’s why winning matters kids.

And #3 – It seems to be quiet times across the football landscape, and that’s on the heels of a history-making NFL free agency period last week which was aptly described as a “free for all”.

But the CFL Combine is going on this weekend in Winnipeg and portions are being livestreamed for free at CFL.ca.

There are some Saskatchewan players taking part – perhaps the next stars of the CFL – and a couple of them are kids of my longtime friends.

When did we get so old?

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

#1. Thanks for this Rod!! I’m aware but didn’t know how or where to vote, so I’m registered!! Let’s do it for Wolseley!! I agree, amazing how no Saskatchewan town has ever won!! I’ve lived on Alberta since 1972, but will always be about Saskatchewan!!
