FRIDAY COMMENTARY – GOOD NEWS, SO-SO NEWS

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

It’s been awhile since we did a good news/bad news commentary.

And perhaps the contrast isn’t quite that sharp with today’s topic.

The good news coming out of the CFL’s annual Winter Meetings in Kananaskis, AB is that the league got quite a bit of positive media attention at a time of year when it’s usually pretty quiet.

Commissioner Randy Ambrosie and Montreal Head Coach Jason Maas both came on the RP Show and were optimistic about 2023. This is certainly a good time of year to spread the CFL word!

The bad news – if you can really even call it that – is that the team brass left The Rockies with more questions than answers.

That’s just football.

With free agency looming, the Ticats can’t really say for sure if Bo Levi Mitchell will be their quarterback and the Alouettes can’t really say the same thing about Trevor Harris.

Although the smart money says they’ll get deals done.

The Riders definitely don’t know who their quarterback will be but have told Cody Fajardo, “We’ll sign you if we don’t find someone better.”

If you ever wondered how or why football is a humbling sport, there’s Exhibit A.

And Saskatchewan doesn’t have its coaching staff filled yet but it’s just a matter of time. There’s people who want those jobs, but the Riders must be looking for the right fit.

The latest news in Riderville came down last night; that the team offered a contract to Huskies quarterback Mason Nyhus, however the Regina product turned it down and has quickly turned to life-after-football.

That really is too bad, because I was counting on that being a good news story for the Green & White this spring.

Maybe that’s your bad news right there.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

“We will sign you if we don’t find anyone better”, Real promising news for Rider fans, Where are they looking anyway. Maybe in outer space as per Rider comments about Bo Levi. Earth calling Dave.

Not sure what he’s expecting. The idea that every player gets the 1999 John Elway sendoff is ludicrous. That instance by the way would not have had the prince charming ending. Had they not won in 1998 he’s have been turfed because he lost how many before. This is excatly why I cheered/laughed when Scott Schultz quit mid season to go sell insurance. When you’re employer tells you he’s looking for your replacement even if he’s half joking – tough beans you do what you gotta do to protect yourself. In the business world it also means you sit on… Read more »

I said this at the end of last season regarding Fajardo. They had better have a sound plan for a better replacement if they are not interested in Fajardo. Looks like they don’t. In the meantime, they pissed off a guy they just may need. How is that for planning, just shoot from the hip and hope the target is hit. Poor at best.

Craig Dickenson talked to much about Cody’s status with Riders. Cody spoke too much earlier as well. craig just had to say, “ Cody is still in the mix with the the other available qb’s.”

It’s a ‘coaches brotherhood’ thing.
Craig makes Cody the sacrificial lamb because Craig can’t throw shade on Jason Maas.

how about this for bad news……..Ambrosie came out of the winter meetings with his commissioner job still in tact. How that guy is still the commissioner is beyond me. He is a doufus.
