FRIDAY COMMENTARY – ISN’T THAT SPECIAL

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THIS FRIDAY TO END THE WEEK …

FIRST OFF, IT’LL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH REVENGE FOR BEING ROBBED IN THE 2004 STANLEY CUP FINAL, BUT IT FELT GOOD FOR THE CALGARY FLAMES TO DUMP THE 2-TIME DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPION TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 4-1 THURSDAY IN THE SADDLEDOME.

THE DIFFERENCE FROM TUESDAY’S HOME LOSS TO WASHINGTON? THE FLAMES NEVER LET OFF THE GAS IN THIS ONE AND CALGARY IS HOME TO A TRUE STANLEY CUP CONTENDER.

SECONDLY, AT A SPORTS BANQUET IN PARADISE HILL A FEW YEARS BACK, DARRYL SUTTER TOLD THE CROWD HE’D ONLY GET BACK INTO COACHING IF HE HAD A DEAL WHERE HE ONLY HAD TO COACH HOME GAMES!

A YEAR AND A HALF LATER, THE JOLLY RANCHER WAS BACK ON THE BENCH IN CALGARY TURNING THE FLAMES AROUND.

IT REMINDS ME OF SEAHAWKS COACH PETE CARROLL SAYING LAST WEEK THE TEAM HAD NO INTEREST IN TRADING QUARTERBACK RUSSELL WILSON. A WEEK LATER, WILSON WAS TRADED TO THE DENVER BRONCOS.

THE LESSON HERE IS THAT THESE GUYS WEREN’T LYING; BUT THINGS CHANGE.

IT JUST TELLS ME YOU CAN’T PUT MUCH STOCK IN WHAT YOU HEAR AND THINGS ARE RARELY FACE VALUE.

THIRDLY, IT’S ALWAYS A TREAT TO INTERVIEW REGINA PATS STAR CONNOR BEDARD. I HAD THE CHANCE TO DO IT AGAIN ON THURSDAY ON THE RP SHOW AND I’M NOT EMBARRASSED TO SAY I STILL GET NERVOUS TO INTERVIEW CONNOR!

HE’S 16 AND I’M 49 BUT THAT STEELY GLARE HE GIVES ALWAYS CUTS RIGHT THROUGH TO YOUR SPINE.

BEDARD’S BIG NEWS IN ALBERTA AND PEOPLE ASKED IF I’D EVER INTERVIEWED HIM BEFORE. I PROUDLY SAY I’VE BEEN INTERVIEWING HIM SINCE HE WAS 14.

THE PATS ARE HOME FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT, AND I’D SUGGEST YOU GET OUT AND WATCH HIM BEFORE HE’S GONE.

HE’S THAT SPECIAL.

AND LASTLY, I LOATHE TO SAY IT BUT SASKIE CURLING FANS WILL BE ON PINS & NEEDLES FRIDAY MORNING AS OUR TWO TEAMS – FLASCH AND DUNSTONE – MEET IN A TIEBREAKER FRIDAY MORNING AT THE BRIER JUST DOWN THE ROAD IN LETHBRIDGE.

I LOATHE TO SAY IT BECAUSE IT’S ON AIR AT THE SAME TIME AS MY TV SHOW, BUT AS WE ENTER THE PLAYOFFS AND SASKATCHEWAN’S IN CONTENTION, THIS MORNING WE’LL FIND OUT WHO WILL CARRY THE FLAG. OOOO, THE IRONY OF THIS MEETING!
