FRIDAY COMMENTARY: KEEP CHOPPIN’ WOOD

A coupla three or more thoughts heading into Wildcard Weekend:

#1 – You can learn a lot from sports, and translate it to life. Everybody’s talking about the lengthy win streaks in the NHL; Edmonton & Florida have won nine in a row while the Jets & Kraken have won eight straight.

And Matthew Tkachuk broke out of a first half slump to score four goals in the past two games. Game-winners, and game-tyers.

They’ll all tell you they didn’t change a thing with their preparation. As Chris Jones says, “Keep choppin’ wood” and things will eventually go your way.

I first learned of this when Pats coach Dale Derkatch was helping Jordan Eberle break out of a scoring slump way back in the day.

“Keep doing the right things, and your luck will eventually turn around.”

Take that to the bank.

#2 – Hopefully the CFL deep-thinkers come to their senses before changing any rules before the 2024 season. Word came out of winter meetings in Nashville this week that the league’s considering eliminating kickoffs after touchdowns and having the offense scrimmage from their 40-yard line.

Umm, no.

#3 – As a career media guy, I’ve got to pass along condolences to the friends and fans of longtime Edmonton writers & broadcasters John Short and Robin Brownlee.

They both passed away this week and while I knew Robin far better than John, they both leave a big hole in the hearts of Edmonton sports fans.

This biz ain’t what it used to be and thanks to guys like that, it used to be great.

And #4 – On the best NFL weekend of the year with six Wildcard games, here are my winners: Houston, Kansas City, Buffalo, Dallas, Detroit and Tampa Bay.

Do NOT take that to the bank.
