A coupla’ three thoughts headed into a great sports weekend …

For those partial to football, don’t let the cold winter get you down. Bowl season officially kicks off in U.S. college football on Friday with an afternoon doubleheader!

Things get going with the Bahamas Bowl featuring Miami (Ohio) versus Alabama-Birmingham. If you need a rooting interest, that’s a battle of the alma mater of Milt Stegall and hometown of Corey Chamblin!

Then it’s the Cure Bowl from Orlando featuring Texas-San Antonio versus Troy.

Check your local listings for channels in your area. There are 42 Bowl games in all this Holiday season!

Truth be told, as you know I’m a hockey guy at heart but don’t tell anybody … I’d far rather watch football on TV.

And college games offer so much variety in terms of schemes, formations and talent. There’s a lot of scoring, and a lot of mistakes which makes the games that much more unpredictable!

The same actually goes for junior hockey which I’ve long called “perfectly imperfect”.

What more do you need to know for your sports schedule than the fact the Regina Pats are at the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night?

The faces and names change but one thing doesn’t: it’s the best rivalry in all of junior hockey and it’s only a short drive.

Add to that five games in the SJHL and three in the NHL including the Blues at the Flames.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my first 50 years, you can let life get you down or you can wake up each day looking for something to get excited about.

You already know which I’ve chosen.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

The reason why college football is so good is it compliments the CFL game. Many of these guys will come up here and either do well or simply wash out. Then it’s fun to sit back and watch them make millions either coaching college or heading to the NFL and you have people up here who have no clue. Case in point. My guess is Damon Allen most likely is selling insurance or real estate. Yet Sean Payton and Jason Garrett were his backups in Ottawa. Then you get Steve Sarkisian in the CFL resembled an intramural level player now… Read more »
