Friday Commentary: Not My Job

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend:
#1 – It’s going to be a fun one, and it’s not hard to pinpoint where my focus is. It’s on the NHL playoff race and the Ovie Watch. Alex Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals host the hapless Chicago Blackhawks tonight and the Great 8 is just two goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s career goals record. Will he do it tonight? I dunno, but we gotta watch.
#2 – Of course I’ve got my eye on baseball too and the AL-East leading Blue Jays open a series in New York this weekend with a Friday matinee against the Mets. The season is a week old and the Jays are in first place at 5-2! Let’s enjoy it while it lasts.
#3 – It’s the dawn of a new era in the CFL with the appointment of Commissioner Stewart Johnston on Wednesday. There are so many questions! Will the global initiative be continued, or rightfully scrapped? Will the new TV deal be double the last one, like we just saw with the NHL & Sportsnet this week? Will the CFL now stand up and fight the NFL’s invasion of Canada? We’ll be discussing it all today on the RP Show with Jim Barker & Moose Dupont.
#4 – I’ve also got an eye on the Florida Panthers who visit Ottawa and Detroit this weekend, carrying a three game losing streak. There’s panic among Cats fans in South Florida and I’m enjoying the banter between the fans. What’s the discussion? That there are so many *new* fans since the team’s explosion in popularity in 2023 and the old-timers are scolding them for being bandwagoners, and not knowing what the tough times were like for 30 years before that!
Sounds like the debate in the Rider Nation circa the mid-2010s.
And #5 – Speaking of the Riders, the Green & White are holding a camp in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday. If you’re in the area, drop by! I’ll be there, with camera in hand. But don’t expect a scouting report on the hot prospects.
That’s not my job.

Great stuff What Alexander Ovechkin has accomplished. This generation of NHL’ers are on their way out – Gretzky was correct when he retired in 1999. He said in 20+ years the hockey players of the future will resemble nothing that’s ever been seen before. I watched him and Crosby when they both came in. Those were the gold standard and then after that you had Malkin and there was the Chicago guys – Toews, Kane, Keith. Kane is #3 on the list. Alexander Ovechkin is the best to ever lace them up. If Crosby was a Ron Francis/Steve Yzerman hybrid.… Read more »
