FRIDAY COMMENTARY – OCEANFRONT PROPERTY
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
A coupla thoughts headed into Memorial Day weekend …
#1 – The CFL preseason really gets going with ghusto with four games including the BC Lions at the Roughriders on Saturday night. Preseason Game 1 is always little more than a dressed-up practice but for the diehards, it’s just nice to see the boys in Green & White again.
God bless the CFL for running a Pick ‘Em challenge regarding this weekend’s games but if you gamble on CFL exhibition games, I also have some oceanfront property in Arizona you may wanna buy.
Still, there are only 10 home game weekends every year and they’re all special. This is one of ‘em.
#2 – It was a whale of a hockey game in Dallas Thursday night and the Stars staved off elimination with a 3-2 victory over Vegas, forcing a Game 5 in Sin City on Saturday.
Has this put some doubt in the minds of the Golden Knights that they may have lost control of this series? Unlikely. But you can bet the Florida Panthers are happy, as they get some much-needed rest and await their Stanley Cup Final opponent.
#3 – It was an odd question the host posed to me on Global Edmonton’s supper news last night. They wanted a Florida angle and she said, “Why should Canadians watch the Stanley Cup Final since it’s going to be two Sunbelt teams?”
Is there any other answer than, “Because it’s the Cup?”
#4 – And lastly, the Memorial Cup opens with a bang Friday night. Patrick Roy’s Quebec Remparts take on the host Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre. Roy is eyeing junior hockey’s biggest prize while also being courted by NHL teams to be their next head coach. His last M.C. is one of the biggest storylines of one of hockey’s biggest tournaments.
Meanwhile you’re going to hear a lot about the supposed “WHL Curse” whereby WHL teams have run up quite a drought at the Memmer. Peter Loubardias and I debated it lustily on Thursday’s RP Show.
He says the Dub has fallen behind the other leagues but I disagree.
We’ll find out this week.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE & Streaming)
The WHL has not fallen behind anything. To the point the Memorial Cup is a nice to have versus the WHL title The simple answer is geography. The season started in October. We are almost in June. Quebec League with the exception of the Remparts are a creampuff league. So not a mark on those guys. OHL – what is the average; 3 hour bus trips? Maybe a stretch north…. Go play the WHL. It’s across 4 provinces and into the northwest USA. Nobody can compare what those leagues do as opposed to a seattle/wpg war of attrition. WHL also… Read more »
I don’t know about that man. If the q is such a creampuff league then wouldn’t the dub dominate them? Yet the oil kings were the first team knocked out of the tournament last season
