Friday Commentary: Out Of Control

A coupla three or more thoughts heading into the weekend …
#1 – I thought Fall was for football and winter was for hockey? Well that’s true but even into the New Year, the gridiron is providing plenty of thrills and chills. College football isn’t big in Canada but it’s getting bigger and anyone who watched last night’s Fiesta Bowl got a treat. Miami outlasted Ole Miss 31-27 in Glendale, Arizona and has advanced to the National Championship in their own stadium (Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens) a week from Monday. That’s a helluva story.
#2 – Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is on the Roughriders protected list so that had a lot of Rider Priders eager to tune in last night. However the heroics that got the Rebels into the semifinal game weren’t as evident last night. Plus a missed field goal and key drops really sunk Ole Miss in the second half. Still, the Riders will need a succession plan for Trevor Harris at some point.
#3 – Speaking of succession plans, when the Las Vegas Raiders hired 73-year old Pete Carroll as head coach a year ago, some of their fans asked me what the succession plan was. I replied that I was quite certain they didn’t have one and clearly they didn’t. Carroll’s been fired and now the Raiders are holding open auditions for Pete’s replacement. That’s one of eight openings in the NFL right now and the rumour mill is absolutely out of control. However I like the one that says John Harbaugh will be the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
And #4 – We head into another NHL weekend with plenty of fun games on tap but I gotta ask, who saw the bottom falling out for so many Canadian teams? One look at the bottom of the overall standings makes a guy’s stomach turn, when you see Winnipeg, Vancouver and Calgary as 1,2,3 for the worst teams in the league.
I’m sure many will blame Gary Bettman.

And #4 – Winnipeg Jets blame inept gm cheveldayoff as the Jets never going to win a Stanley Cup with him at the helm, Vancouver Canucks blame a clueless ownership. Calgary Flames blame conroy and his head coach.
3) Pete Carroll. He has the same trophies in his case that Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer have. He could not carry their luggage This guy will be remembered as who Robert Kraft fired to bring in Bill Parcels and begin the foundation of the Brady/Belichick/Kraft; who deserves credit debate. When in fact none of them do as Parcells left them the manual. He is also the guy that screwed up a call in the Super Bowl. At the height of woke “r” word woke manipulation his little coaching seminars were promoting “diversity is our strength”. Add in if that… Read more »
