FRIDAY COMMENTARY – SHIVER ME TIMBERS

A coupla three thoughts headed into another glorious summer weekend …

#1 – Apologies to all other CFL teams but this weekend’s Touchdown Atlantic in Halifax between the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders is the Game of the Week.

It’s the sixth edition of the CFL’s marquee summer game all-time, and the first in Halifax. The first four were in Moncton and the fifth was in Wolfville.

And the Riders are hoping not to be shipwrecked in this one. Toronto is out to match their best start – at 6-0 – since 1935. Their quarterback, Jim Kelly’s nephew Chad, has won five in a row which is the first Argo pivot to do that since Michael Bishop in 2007.

Meanwhile Sask is coming off a 19-9 loss at BC, and that was the first time in 24 games they failed to score a touchdown.

Shiver me timbers.

#2 – Apologies to all other sports but L.A. Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani is the biggest thing going right now. Literally and figuratively.

He may or may not be the greatest MLB player ever, but on Thursday he became the first player ever to throw a 1-hit shutout in Game 1 of a doubleheader, then hit two homeruns in the nightcap.

Bravo to the Angels for electing to keep him ahead of the trade deadline because you don’t let players like that go.

But we’ll be all be watching to see what they pay him in free agency, and he may become sports’ first 100-million dollar player.

And #3 – We’ll be spending the rest of summer in Calgary and that makes me happy.

On Thursday I had a long overdue meeting with the Flames and optimism reins supreme as they look to atone for a major stubbing of their toe last season, when everyone lost their job.

Two things are for certain: They’re having no problems selling tickets, and you can watch for their people to appear on The RP Show live from Century Downs Racetrack & Casino.

Hard work pays off.
