FRIDAY COMMENTARY – SURE ROY

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

We close the week with another edition of the good, the great and the ugly!

First, the good: It’s good that the newest Canadian Football Hall of Famer Roy Shivers returned to Regina this weekend and held a friends-only event at the Regina Rugby Club on Thursday night.

In his seven seasons as General Manager of the Roughriders, Shivers amassed a lot of friends. We’re not sure what the reason is for Roy’s trip back to the Queen City other than to take in the Roughriders and Stampeders on Saturday night – two of his former teams – but it should be a fun night.

Shivers hasn’t been back since being fired in August of 2006. I see he told the Leader Post this week that he wasn’t fired; he quit.

Sure Roy. We all quit.

You’d think Shivers is old enough to know that it doesn’t matter!

All good things come to an end.

Next, the great: The same can be said for the life span of the Saddledome here in Calgary. News came down this week that the Flames and City of Calgary have opened talks on a new arena for a third time only this time, they’re bringing in a third party to broker the deal.

It really seems like this time around they’re going to get it done, and that’s great.

I love the Saddledome but it’s aging and it doesn’t help to look up Highway #2 and see the world’s best hockey arena sitting in Edmonton.

It also doesn’t hurt that the Flames are the #1 team in the NHL, despite their woeful showing against Buffalo last night (a 6-3 loss).

And lastly, the ugly: It has to be the bumbling and fumbling of the Riders quarterback situation this week.

If the team truly knew going into the week that Cody Fajardo would be benched for Saturday’s must-win game against Calgary, then why not just say it on Day 1 rather than lie and say he was given a “vet” day?

All it did was make Cody look bad and have to answer for a team that clearly has no plan for the short- or long-term future.

I’d say that’s as ugly as it gets, but just wait to see what it’s like in Sask if and when the Riders miss the playoffs!

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

As a season ticket holder, it’s gonna’ get ugly……no, Jeremy, it’s NOT just another season and you KNEW how crappy the O line was, did nothing to fix it, signed Cody and dumped Collaros. And Duke? Waste of time, money AND space……..Calgary drafts Canadian O linemen constantly! Sure, we have lots of outstanding Canadian receivers, but no time to throw the ball to them! Reynolds, ODay and Dickenson gone please!!

It’s 100% certain that the Riders will miss the playoffs. I think we were screwed on day one of the season when no improvements were made to our porous offensive line. They were awful last year and got worse this year when Dan Clark got injured. Even Tom Brady couldn’t win with those players.
