FRIDAY COMMENTARY – THE HARD WAY
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
The Winnipeg Jets got a tough lesson Thursday night.
And I’m happy to talk about it because I know there’s a ton of Jets fans in our listening area.
There’s no doubt that along with the New Jersey Devils, Tage Thompson and the Seattle Kraken, the resurgence of the Winnipeg Jets is one of the top stories in the NHL this year.
Their 12 home wins are the most in the West Conference and I actually had the team ranked fifth in my weekly NHL Top 5 this week.
But at some point, you knew they’d have to go on the road.
So they did Thursday night, opening up a road trip against the NHL-leading Boston Bruins.
And as a matter of fact, for half the game, the Jets were looking very much like a Stanley Cup contender.
They had a 2-0 lead, and goalie Connor Hellebuyck looked to be in the zone.
I was going to take to Twitter to mention that “Helle” must be in a zone because he was stopping pucks he didn’t even see.
Thankfully sober second thought prevailed and I stuck to my rule of not Tweeting during games.
At the game’s midway point, everything turned. The Bruins got on the board when a shoot-in took a crazy hop off the glass out front of the net and David Pastrnak banged it home.
(Notice how these these things always happen to the road goalies?)
From there the Bruins took over with goals from Jake DeBrusk and Nick Foligno and Boston skated off with their NHL-best 26th victory, 3-2.
The Jets had to be wondering what on earth happened?
They got “Boston’ed”, and realized the hard way that they haven’t won anything yet.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
