FRIDAY COMMENTARY – THE SQUEAKY WHEEL
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Show on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
With so many things going on in sports, it’s hard to keep your mind on just one.
So here are a few thoughts as we enter a fun October weekend:
As far as the NHL goes, all went predictably on Thursday in many teams’ season-openers. Matthew Tkachuk scored in his Panthers debut as Florida won on Long Island 3-1. The Leafs were embarrassed in Montreal on Wednesday but rallied to win their home-opener 3-2 over Washington.
And in an early-season battle for NHL supremacy, the Calgary Flames built up a 5-1 lead at home and hung on to beat Colorado 5-3.
The “Ya but” crowd is already saying, “Ya but the Avalanche played the night before!”
I told you we don’t listen to those people.
The Roughriders are off for the weekend which could cause Sask football fans to be glum but the silver lining is that it’s given the Rams and Huskies centre stage in Canada West football.
The University of Regina visits the University of Saskatchewan Saturday at 1:00 in what’s likely a Hardy Cup preview. The Huskies are 5-0 while the Rams are 4-1.
Can anyone remember when a game between these two has been so big, so late in the season?
And finally, the baseball is still going on but without the Blue Jays in it, I’ve turned my attention elsewhere.
There’s just too much else going on, calling for our attention.
And that’s the way it is in sports these days.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
