MLB

Vladimir Guerrero Junior hit a home run with his Hall of Famer father in attendance for the first time at a MLB game Thursday as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Baltimore Orioles 7-6. Guerrero hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning on his way to a four-R-B-I outing that extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Vladimir Guerrero Senior, who did see his son hit a home run at an All-Star game, was watching among the crowd of almost 28-thousand people at Rogers Centre.

CFL

• Players had to be called back to the field Thursday in Ottawa during overtime in the game between the Redblacks and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Saskatchewan had taken a 22-19 lead in overtime and appeared to hold off Ottawa’s last attempt at scoring. However, the game was resumed after it was announced that the Riders had been called for roughing the passer on the play. The game ended in a 22-22 tie.
• The Calgary Stampeders will look to win their first road game of the season when the team travels to Toronto to take on the Argonauts Friday night. Calgary is 0-and-4 away from McMahon Stadium this year while Toronto sports a 3-and-1 record at B-MO Field. Both teams have four wins and four losses on the season, with the Stamps emerging victorious last Sunday in Calgary 27-23 over the Argos.

OLYMPICS

• Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson are hoping to culminate a run to the finals at the women’s beach volleyball event at the Paris Olympics with a gold medal. The pair will take on world Number-1 Ana Patrícia and Duda of Brazil today in the tournament’s final. Canada has never reached the podium at the event, topping out at fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
• Imane Khelif is one victory away from wrapping up her tumultuous Paris Olympics with a gold medal around her neck after enduring waves of online abuse over misconceptions about her sex. Khelif fights Yang Liu of China in the final of the women’s welterweight division
• With six points in two seconds, the U.S. Olympic team was on its way to another Olympic gold medal game. Stephen Curry scored 36 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:16 left, and the U.S. advanced to play for gold in the Paris Olympics on Saturday night after beating Serbia 95-91.

NFL

• EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Tommy DeVito replaced an injured Drew Lock late in the first quarter and led New York on two first-half scoring drives that Eric Gray capped with runs of 48 and 1 yard as the Giants beat the Detroit Lions 14-3 in a preseason opener limited to mostly backups.
• FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Drake Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, played one series in his debut with New England on Thursday night, and the Patriots played their first game in 24 years without Bill Belichick as coach, beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3 in a preseason game.
• The contract negotiation between the Dallas Cowboys and star receiver CeeDee Lamb took a turn Thursday, with team owner Jerry Jones saying he “doesn’t have any urgency” in resolving the impasse. Lamb, 25, responded with an “L-O-L” posted on social media platform X, marking his first response to the situation. Lamb is entering the final year of his rookie contract and led the NFL in receptions last season.
