Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros finally solved the Edmonton Elks’ defence in the second half of a 28-14 win Thursday.

Collaros completed 20 of 24 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns in front of 28,512 fans at IG Field.

The Blue Bombers, who were upset by the Ottawa Redblacks last week, improved to 5-2 in the CFL’s West Division.

Winnipeg hasn’t lost two regular-season games in a row since the end of 2021.

The desperate Elks extended their losing steak to seven straight.

The game was tied 6-6 at halftime.

RIDERS

The Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, alongside the Plaza of Honour Committee, has announced that builder Wendy Kelly (posthumous) and the 2013 Grey Cup team will be inducted into the 2023 SaskTel Plaza of Honour.

Kelly will be the first woman to be inducted into the Plaza of Honour as an individual after tirelessly volunteering her time to the Green and White over many years. Along with her Plaza first, Kelly was also the first woman to serve on the Roughriders’ Board.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

Canada opened the FIFA women’s World Cup with a zero-zero draw with Nigeria. Canadian captain Christine Sinclair was stopped on a penalty kick in the 50th minute of the match in Melbourne, Australia. The reigning Olympic champions take on Ireland next week in the group stage.

CEBL

Simi Shittu notched a game-high 32 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Calgary Surge to a crucial wire-to-wire win over the Winnipeg Sea Bears by a score of 96-82 at WinSport Event Centre on Thursday. The historic double-double for Shittu spoiled Winnipeg’s chance at clinching first place in the Western Conference and marked the first time a player tallied 30-plus points and 15 or more rebounds in the same CEBL game.

MLS

Lionel Messi makes his Inter Miami debut Friday evening to usher in the next chapter of his storied soccer career. Miami is at home to Mexico’s Cruz Azul in Fort Lauderdale. When Messi announced last month he would join the MLS club, Miami rushed to increase its stadium capacity by about three thousand seats.

NFL

The NFL says Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder sexually harassed a team employee and oversaw team executives who deliberately withheld millions of dollars in revenue from other clubs. The league says Snyder has agreed to pay a $60 million fine. The NFL released a 23-page report detailing an investigation into Snyder’s conduct just minutes after league owners unanimously approved the sale of the Commanders to Josh Harris.

Coach Jones keeps playing Cornelius because foolish GM Jones gave him an extension. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen much from the “In Jones We Trust” crowd lately.
