FRIDAY SPORTS PAGE: EPIC NIGHT IN EDMONTON
CFL
The Elks’ losing streak in Edmonton has now stretched to 22 games. Dru Brown threw four touchdown passes as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers erased a 22-point deficit to defeat the hapless Elks 38-29 last night. The Bombers improved to 7-2 and took over sole possession of first place in the CFL West, but lost quarterback Zach Collaros to an undetermined injury in the process. Edmonton’s home losing skid is the longest in North American professional sports history.
Meanwhile the Montreal Alouettes hope to answer some questions tonight as they look for a third win in a row. Starting quarterback Cody Fajardo is expected to be a game-time decision as the Alouettes host the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Fajardo is hurting after a hit against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week. Also, Walter Fletcher will start at running back, replacing William Stanback who suffered a hip injury.
MLB
Former Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is going to be honoured at Rogers Centre tonight ahead of Toronto’s game with the Chicago Cubs. Jose Berrios starts for the Jays in the first game of the three-game interleague series. Javier Assad will take the mound for Chicago.
Max Muncy drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk to force in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Clayton Kershaw returned from the injured list, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Kershaw gave up one run and three hits in five innings of his first start since July 27. He had been on the injury list with left shoulder soreness.
Bruce Bochy returns to San Francisco this weekend as manager of the Texas Rangers ready to face his former Giants in an interleague series. It will be Bochy’s first time back in another uniform since managing San Francisco for 13 years and winning three World Series championships in 2010, `12 and ’14, and he’s sure to receive a rousing ovation.
WOMENS WORLD CUP
Salma Paralluelo scored deep in extra time to give Spain a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and send the sixth-ranked nation into the semifinals of the Women’s World Cup for the first time. The teenager struck in the 113th minute of an epic clash between European heavyweights whose men’s teams also have storied World Cup histories.
