WINTERHAWKS 4 GIANTS 3
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice, including the winner, as the Portland Winterhawks downed the visiting Vancouver Giants 4-3 on Friday to take Game 1 of their Western Hockey League first-round matchup.
Bjorkstrand broke a 3-3 deadlock at 18:23 of the third period for the Winterhawks while Brendan Leipsic also had a pair of goals.
Portland’s Taylor Leier, Mathew Dumba and Derrick Pouliot each chipped in with two assists while Brendan Burke made 13 saves for the win.
Thomas Foster, Brett Kulak and Jackson Houck supplied the scoring for the Giants and Payton Lee stopped 41-of-45 shots in defeat.

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – Marek Langhamer made 25 saves as the Tigers edged Swift Current in Game 1 of their first-round matchup.
Curtis Valk opened the scoring for Medicine Hat 14:57 into the first period and Chad Butcher added the eventual winner at 2:55 of the third. Julius Honka replied for the Broncos at 8:40 of the third while on the power play.
Swift Current’s Eetu Laurikainen turned away 28-of-30 shots in a losing cause.
