FROM THE KANSAS CITY STAR

BY TEREZ A. PAYLOR

The Kansas City Star

An all-star Canadian Football League receiver who recently worked out with the Chiefs was released Thursday so he can sign a deal with an NFL team.

Saskatchewan Roughriders star Weston Dressler declined to reveal the name of his new team during a news conference, citing the need for the proper paperwork to be completed.

But multiple reports out of Canada said Dressler plans on signing with the Chiefs, who worked him out on Jan. 14. A source also told The Star that Dressler was coming to Kansas City.

Dressler’s agent Justin Seurer also confirmed that his client has reached an agreement with an NFL team, but declined to reveal the team’s name until the proper paperwork has been completed. An announcement could conceivably come as early as next week.

Dressler has plenty of experience working as a slot receiver and punt returner, a need for the Chiefs that could soon be exacerbated by free agency. The Chiefs, who interviewed a number of receivers at the Senior Bowl last week, would like to retain receiver Dexter McCluster, a free agent who made his first Pro Bowl this season as a punt returner. But the Chiefs’ salary cap is tight and McCluster could command a deal that’s worth more than they are willing to pay.

The Chiefs, of course, have not announced any pending moves, and a message to a team spokesman was not immediately returned.

Dressler also offered a “thank you” of sorts for Saskatchewan fans that doubled as a vague hint about his new team.

“The team that I’m talking with, I made a request for a certain jersey number (13) because I wanted to show my respect to the 13th man of Rider nation,” Dressler said. “If everything works out the way I’m hoping, I’ll be able to wear 13 on Sundays and Rider Nation will be out there with me.”

For what it’s worth, the Chiefs currently have No. 13 available. The last player to wear the number was quarterback Ricky Stanzi in 2011.

Dressler = all class. Hope he continues to have success! The Riders have a HUGE hole to fill and no one on the depth chart that I know of who is ready to be a starting slotback and be a big part in this offence.

Anyone that doesn't think Dressler can make it down there has been bitten by the "American Worship Bug" or brainwashed by the NFL hype machine or both.
