GAINEY, ARCENEAUX DISCUSS THEIR FUTURE ON THE RP SHOW
Pending free agents Ed Gainey and Manny Arceneaux appeared on The Rod Pedersen Show on Friday, discussing their football futures for 2020. The pair of CFL veterans had solid years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2019 but could be on different roads in the New Year.
Gainey signed as a free agent in Saskatchewan in 2016 after stints in Hamilton and Montreal, and says the signs are pointing to a return to the Riders.
“My contract’s sitting, I guess,” Gainey said from his off-season home in North Carolina. “I’m waiting for February 11. The team expressed that they want me back and I want to be back. We’ll see where it goes.
“I think we could all use a little (advice) here and there but I’ve been around for awhile. Free agency is a part that I haven’t experienced yet. I’m not obliged to it. Like I said, I want to be in Saskatchewan, they want me back, so hopefully we come to something here before free agency or whenever we do. But at the end of the day, I have to do what I have to do for myself and my family. I don’t really wanna get too much into it. I’m just gonna leave it at that.”
Gainey appeared in all 18 games with the Riders in 2019, making 56 tackles and two interceptions.
Arceneaux joined Friday’s show from his home in Dallas, TX and said – after spending one season in Sask following eight years with the BC Lions – his future is very much more up in the air.
“I’m not under contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders,” Arceneaux – who was wearing a black Roughriders bunnyhug – asserted. “Manny’s gonna be a free agent so I’m just being realistic. I’m just waiting to see where my journey’s going to take me in 2020. I basically had a full year of just being healthy and playing football the way that I play football.
“There’s plenty of gas left in the tank and that’s how I look at it. Until I sign on the dotted line somewhere, I refer to every team as ‘them’, or ‘they’, or ‘that organization’. That’s pretty much what I’m waiting around for. I’m training, staying on top of things and waiting to see what happens for 2020.”
Arceneaux appeared in 11 games with the Green & White in 2019, making 22 receptions for 249 yards and two TDs.
