Lloydminster’s Braden Holtby made 30 saves for his second career playoff shutout and Jay Beagle scored his first goal of this post-season, giving the Washington Capitals a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers Monday night. Washington has a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Canadian Russell Martin had a pinch-hit RBI single to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-1 win over the Yankees at Rogers Centre. Martin began the game on the bench as Josh Thole got the start to catch knuckleballer R-A Dickey, who earned his first win of the season. Dickey pitched eight inning giving up one run on three hits and three walks.

The Blue Jays were without hitting coach Brook Jacoby for their game against the Yankees. Jacoby was suspended 14 games by Major League Baseball for his post-game conduct toward the umpiring crew after Toronto’s 4-1 loss to the Red Sox in Boston on April 29. The Blue Jays say they will appeal the suspension.

Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez left Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay after running into a side wall while attempting a catch. The team announced later it was a sprained left shoulder. Ramirez ran toward the corner to catch James Loney’s slicing fly ball along the foul line. He had it in his glove before it popped out when his left shoulder hit the padded wall.

Derrick Rose scored 25 points and Pau Gasol added 21, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 99-92 victory over the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal. Kyrie Irving scored 30 points and LeBron James added 19 and 15 rebounds for Cleveland.

Match Player winner Rory McIlroy and Masters champion Jordan Spieth are in the same group for the opening two rounds of The Players Championship this week. McIlroy has stretched his lead at Number 1 in the world with his victory Sunday in the Match Play Championship. Spieth is Number 2 in the world. Jason Day is the third member of that group.

I would love to see Holtby lead the Capitals to the Cup victory this year!
