GREY CUP RATINGS UP

WINNIPEG – Canada’s biggest party, the GREY CUP, continues to be one of the biggest events on Canadian television, growing 6% compared to last year according to preliminary overnight data from Numeris.

An average audience of 4.3 million viewers tuned in to TSN and RDS to watch the Edmonton Eskimos win a hotly-contested clash with the Ottawa Redblacks in Sunday night’s 103rd GREY CUP presented by Shaw.

Overall, 9.7 million unique viewers, or nearly 30% of the entire Canadian population, watched some or all of the 2015 CFL championship game on TSN and RDS.

Audiences for the 103rd GREY CUP presented by Shaw peaked at 5.5 million viewers late in the game as Edmonton scored a clutch goal line touchdown to take the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

Fans of the winning team rallied around the 103rd GREY CUP presented by Shaw, as the game became the highest-rated program of the calendar year in the Edmonton Extended Market, with 66% of people watching television tuning in for the broadcast.

It's nice to have a feel good story after all the hot garbage from earlier on the blog. The Grey Cup is relevant and always will be, despite what the "football snobs" have to say. It's sickening seeing some so called Canadian football fans actively campaigning for the demise of the CFL. The excuses they make to reject the CFL are absolutely stupid. Yes there are things the league needs to improve on but instead of saying screw the CFL how about contributing something positive and be a part of the improvement process. The same, I believe, needs to go… Read more »

You nailed it Dubya, some Canadians just can't accept anything Canadian as worth while. Every opportunity is made by the media to make the CFL look inferior. Even this blogger who makes his living from the CFL has suggested that the CFL become a development league for the NFL!!! Orridge has his work cut out for him, the CFL will always exist in one form or another and the snobs will always find something to beak about.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Hey Dubya, know that many more people watched the Super Bowl in this country last year than the Grey Cup. Why? It is because the product is better in every aspect. The CFL can't compete with the NFL and when you yokels start realizing that and accept the CFL for what it is, the world will be a lot better. Enjoy your morning coffee sunshine!

Dubya, ratings are down in the CFL because the product has deteriorated. That is largely what Sid was talking about. The entertainment value of CFL games is not what it was a few years ago. This has nothing to do with inferiority complexes, it has to do with a boring product. I watched most of the Grey Cup and while the score was close the game was rather lacklustre. Too many punts and the winning drive was setup by 2 pass interference calls (one of which was botched by the officials) as opposed to great offensive plays. This too me… Read more »

Well Jeb, sounds like there is not a damn thing that the CFL could do to win your support. They could bring in Aaron Rodgers and JJ Watt and Russel Wilson and get CBS to broadcast the games with Jim Nantz on the play by play but because it says CFL you still wouldn't care. Your comment about yokels pretty much confirms this as you find anything to do with CFL is inferior and the people that support it are equally inferior. Might as well just fold up the CFL and have one NFL team based in TO just like… Read more »

Yes Jeb the NFL is superior, it is American after all where everything they do is world class and they declare themselves World Champions. An insignificant country like Canada and it's 35 million citizens should have the same ratings as a country and it's 321 million citizens. Canadians are such losers.I know a guy who works for the Riders he calls NFL "real" football, the most real thing about the NFL is the fans. They are real football fans, they actually support high school and college ball. In Canada the snobs like you Jeb only watch NFL because it's American and… Read more »

The Superbowl attracts between 7-9 million viewers in Canada. Grey Cup ratings are comparable or even better than the Super Bowl. Considering Canada's inferiority complex, Canadians love for anything American and the NFL hype machine the CFL actually holds it's own.
Sorry to burst your Stars and Stripes balloon Jeb.

So ratings were up and the riders and bombers weren't there? Perhaps the league doesn't revolve around the prairies after all…

Curt I understand what you're getting at but that happens all the time in NFL games too. Look at the super bowl a couple years ago, Seahawks led from start to finish and the game was a complete dud. Problem is, the Jebs of the world call it a spectacular Seahawks performance and swoon over how great the NFL is, while if it is a CFL game they call it a bush league show. These same people, if the Grey Cup was an NFL game, would have called it a great defensive battle but since it's a CFL game call… Read more »

Ratings were NOT up, there's just no way. I know CFL fans that weren't even watching it! lol

As for the product on the field? Exciting first half, boring second half (penalties and punts). The fact that the refs DIDN'T call the last PI and it had to be challenged, is the determining factor – THESE REFS NEED SCHOOLING ON THE RULES OR GET A NEW JOB!

The NFL has also become a referee joke, so there's no saying they are superior here! They are blowing calls left and right with what's a catch and what isn't.

Watched the 76 grey cup on utube. Good blast from the past. The most impressive feature were the announcers were not just has bins. They were professionally trained sports announcers with an ability to relate the play on the field without endless repetition of the obvious. They also had a larger vocabulary. Maybe they were paid more and some bean counter couldn't justify the cost. Too bad, the refs today may be bad but it would make better sense to put money back into broadcasters to showcase the talent.

10 million people are watching the Super Bowl are watching the Super Bowl….that is more than half of what is watching "Canada's Spectacular". It proves the NFL is more popular than the CFL. This was probably the only game this season had more than one million watching.

Serious question, do you football snobs get some kind of self-fulfillment by bashing the CFL each and every chance you get? Does it put more money in your pocket and make you more attractive to hot women? You must have pretty pathetic lives if all you do is look for opportunities on blogs, Twitter and Facebook for the chance to rail against the CFL. Bunch of losers.

To you "Negative Nellies' out there. Go ahead and watch your Super Bowl, I don't give a crap. I still enjoyed the Grey Cup game and did you know there's people in cities that enjoy watching their team win the Allan Cup, they don't bitch because it's not the Stanley Cup. Get a life all you Yankee Worshipers.

I hear that a lot of oskee wee wees tuned into this season's grey cup to see their team play. Apparently they have a short memory and forgot about their loss to Ottawa the week before… they also forgot when they last won a grey cup… at least the latter is understandable though as it's been nearly 2 DECADES since they last won one!
