GROUNDFORCE DRILLING RIDER DAY 2 REPORT

The following is the Day 2 report from the 2014 Roughrider Training Camp.

 

ROSTER MOVES

PLAYS OF THE DAY

It was the first opportunity fans got the chance to see special teams in action. While much of the attention is on the returners, newcomer Josh Bartel stood out as he launched a few punts deep towards the sidelines.   

 

QUOTE OF THE DAY

FAN ACCESS

Select players will be available to fans for autographs along the west fence line following the afternoon practices throughout the week.

 

Today the quarterbacks, including starter Darian Durant, walked the fence line and spent time with fans. The defensive backs are on the schedule for Tuesday.

 

TOMORROW

Players and coaches will hit the practice field at Griffiths Stadium for Day 3 of training camp with two practice sessions. The first practice will take place at 8:15AM, while the second will start at approximately 3:00PM.

RIDER COACH COREY CHAMBLIN DAY 2 QUOTES

WHY IS WALK-THROUGH IMPORTANT?

CC:  For us, and the way we do things, I think it’s very important because there’s so many things we’re putting in on offense, defense and even special teams.  With us having some young guys, we want to give them a chance to mentally settle in.  That way they’ll play faster and hopefully we’ll see that.

There’s some things you can see on film (from a walk-through): one is if everyone’s paying attention!  Secondly you can just see without things going at full speed.

ON ROOKIES THAT WERE AT THE FLORIDA CAMP

CC:  Oh they did the physical work.  We didn’t have a playbook for them down there so the biggest thing is now they’re running more and motioning more on offense.  Some of them are mentally firing out right now but that’s what the walk-through was for this morning.

ON THE RUNNING BACK POSITION

CC:  It’s a good group of guys.  Running backs are running backs.  They all are able to run.  The thing I told Coach Coburne is to see mentally where they are.  That’s what I’m more concerned about — where they are on the mental side and how they are in protection.  I’m sure we can hand the ball to them and they can run and will be good.  I’m not sure how great we’ll be in the run game but I’m pretty sure that they can run the ball.

ON RB COACH AVON COBURNE

CC:  He has a very big role.  I just have to be careful with Avon because there are some times that I see they don’t do stuff and I think he’s trying to get back to being a player!  So I have to really monitor him to see that he’s coaching them well.

ON EVALUATING IN CAMP

CC:  I know that was the situation the past couple of years or whenever we first took over here –  you saw things in practice that guys looked good but then when you got in a game, even when Sheets got in a game, that was the difference.  That taught me as a young coach to not make too much of practice but they have to have a good foundation and base there.
