CALGARY (CP) – Jake Virtanen scored twice, including once shorthanded, as the Calgary Hitmen cruised past the Regina Pats 5-1 on Tuesday in the Western Hockey League.

Brady Brassart, Mike Winther and Pavel Padakin also scored for Eastern Conference-leading Calgary (31-11-5).  Jesse Zgraggen had the lone goal for the Pats (24-19-5).

Hitmen goaltender Mack Shields turned aside 31 shots, three better than Regina’s Daniel Wapple.

With the loss, the Pats missed the opportunity to take over first-place in the WHL’s East Division and remained sixth overall in the conference.  Regina visits Edmonton Wednesday evening at 8:00 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 7:35 pm).

Just can't figure it out how a team gets two clear cut breakaways on the same power play – gotta look at the personnel on the power play. In addition since our PK sucks so bad – why not try some different players together like Hunt and Christoffer. And really put more pressure on their defencemen in our zone – we are way too passive and not aggressive enough.

Nothing really changes does it. Weak and undisciplined penalties, lack of leadership, poor special teams. When you combine that with average talent and a poor work ethic it's no wonder this team doesn't do real well against good opposition. A bad loss against Kootenay, a hang on win against PA, and a bad loss against Calgary. The team is trending in the wrong direction. This team is a mediocre team in a division of mediocre teams. It's had three chances in the last 10 days to take over first place in the division and failed each time. It's obvious they… Read more »

5 on 5 Pats were taking it to Calgary but 5 on 3's killed them as it would any Team playing Calgary, as they are just too good to give them those opportunities. There have been a lot of shorthanded goals in this season's series (3 by Calgary and 2 by Pats) so just shows what can happen game to game. Agree that we should be more aggressive on 5 on 4 PK, but can't afford that on 5 on 3 PK…have noticed that most Teams pressure us on our PP's therefore less time to set up.Shake it off boys…another… Read more »

,,,,there was a reason we were 5 on 3 against Calgary. It's called undisciplined penalties, which we take too many of,,,You won't win giving a team two 5 on three and eight power plays in a single game,,,,

Im sure getting tired each and every year listening to how pathetic the Regina Pats are or are becoming.
This franchise is doomed no matter what you do.
