MADANI: IT'S IN BENEVIDES' COURT

By: Arash Madani
Rogers Sportsnet/CKRM

Mike Benevides won two Grey Cup rings as the defensive coordinator of the BC Lions. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping he can bring a third to Regina.

Sportsnet has learned the Riders have offered Benevides their defensive coordinator post. Sources suggested Benevides is considering the position, and likely won’t make a decision until the new year. With Benevides and his family living in suburban Vancouver, the Riders will likely remain patient for the next couple of weeks until Benevides decides his next step.

Benevides was fired as the BC Lions head coach in November, following the team’s playoff loss in Montreal.

Richie Hall, who was Saskatchewan’s defensive coordinator last season, remains on the Riders staff — for now. Hall was demoted, but not fired, at the conclusion of the 2014 campaign in Regina. He is in the mix for the vacancy in Winnipeg for the coordinator job with the Blue Bombers. Benevides was in the conversation for the same position on Mike O’Shea’s staff.

As of Monday morning, sources told Sportsnet there had been no progress on the defensive coordinator search in Winnipe‎g.

Meanwhile Lions offensive coordinator Khari Jones was in the mix for Sask’s QB coach job however sources tell me BC offered Khari a gig on Jeff Tedford’s staff and he’ll take it.

Riders turning into the Lions East.

Chapledaine, now Benevides, bring in Wally as HC and you have the Lions trio from their West dominance days

It will be interesting if Benevides takes the job as he was the one to originally fire Chapdelaine.

Maybe it's just a matter of time but khari Jones is still the offensive coordinator with BC so any talk of him joining the Riders would be very premature. And if he were to get fired he would still be owed the final year of his two year contract he signed. I am sure OC money in BC is better than the QB pay in Sask.

I think the Benevides hire would be excellent. Don't get hung up on two former Lions. Chapdelaine and Benevdides were the undoubtedly best two guys available.
Happy new year!

The CFL rotates Assistants as knowledge is key. It does look odd to essentially exchange our Coordinators for the BC Lions, but these guys all move around.

Benevides is not an upgrade he's more like a different voice. It is what it is.

if theRiders are wise, they would hedge their bets. There is zero certainty this guy is going to come at any rate. He is obviously looking for something better. Is that what we really want?

He will either accept or decline. If he declines, then it is onto the next candidate. If all else fails, Coach Chamblin will take over the D.

The comment that states he's looking for something better? You know this how? Have you talked to Benevides? It might not be that his Family has something to do with his decision? Maybe there is a clause in his severance package that he will get far less if he signs with a Western opponent. Or maybe he just wants to take a year or two off and spend time with his loved ones. If a Man like this dosent rush into a job. He is usually the candidate you want. He will weigh out the positives and negatives and if he… Read more »
