JLB ELECTRIC GAME RECAP: WHEAT KINGS UP 1-0

Brandon, MB. — The Brandon Wheat Kings have drawn first blood in their Western Hockey League Eastern Conference Semi Final with the Regina Pats.

The Wheat Kings opened the best of seven series Friday night with a 5-1 victory before a “sold out” crowd of 5,130 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.

Brandon got goals from five different players including Duncan Campbell and Ivan Provorov, who notched their first ever WHL playoff goals. Jayce Hawryluk, John Quenneville and Tim McGauley also scored for the Wheat Kings, who led 1-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks. Including the first round, Brandon has now won five straight playoff games.

Former Wheat King Taylor Cooper scored in a losing cause for the Pats, who were outshot 31-22.

This marks the second straight season that the Wheat Kings and Pats have met in post season play. Brandon upset Regina in the opening round of last year’s Conference Quarterfinals.

Friday also marked the return of veteran Reid Duke to the Brandon lineup. The former Lethbridge Hurricane, who missed the final sixteen games of the regular season as well as the entire first round series against Edmonton, was making his WHL playoff debut.

Duke, who recorded an assist tonight, was acquired from the Canes last September, had missed the playoffs with Lethbridge during his first two years in the League.

Brandon will be hoping to grab a 2-0 series lead when the two teams return to the ice on Saturday.

Not a bad game and do not let the score tell the tail.OH were done! Brandon had no pp goals so good for our penalty kill as they have a great pp. Our 20 year olds must step up and start to lead the young guys as last night they failed at times to show leadership. My thoughts are now game one is over you will see a different team tonight and the jitters will be gone. As for all of the SO CALLED PAT FANS who have a ton of things to say about the new ownership and the… Read more »

The. Pats are done and pat bus trips are for yesterday. There are better things in life than jr hockey. Get off the bus, breath the fresh air and go discover ( just keep your hands out of your pockets, open and in sight when in public).

Some people just got to be negative. Somehow gives them a thrill to say something or post something negative. They have very sad lives and should be ignored.

We saw last night which team has the better goalie.

The Wheat Kings didn't have their best game and still won 5-1. Scary to think what will happen when Brandon plays like they can.

To be a (knowledgable) fan and a realist are not mutually exclusive. The WK's are bigger, older, faster an and more talented. That's reality. The Pats played poorly in all phases of their game but maybe that had to do with what the Wk's were doing. The Pats wanted to go with a very rookie lineup and maybe the price has to be paid now. They should have added a couple pieces that are now being exposed. Maybe management outsmarted itself. Rhetoric doesn't win games. Talent and coaching does. The Wk's have the advantage there and this will likely be… Read more »

Just remember that Brandon beat Edmonton Oil Kings 8-1 in game 2 of round one, after losing game one 4-1 to Edm.

Why the quotation marks around the sell out Rod? Seems a little pot calling the kettle black based on some of the announced attendances at pats games over the last couple of years

Look for the Pats to dominate game 2. No way brandon can beat a team as good as the Pats twice in a row!

I just checked ticketmaster today and tons of tickets available throughout Brandon's rink for tonights game. My opinion is they know their team is going to make it to 3rd and 4th rounds, so they are waiting.
