LETTING BYGONES BE BYGONES
The Roughriders practiced on Tuesday for the first time since Saturday’s 29-25 loss in Calgary. Everyone’s still talking about the sideline blow-up between Rider tailback Kory Sheets and offensive coordinator Geroge Cortez and both were asked about it after Tuesday’s workout.
“It’s not the first time and I’m sure it probably won’t be the last,” Cortez said when asked how many times he’s had public disagreements with players. “You know, hey, you have to like people who want the ball. It’s like the receivers – you want people who want the ball on every play. The trouble is you won’t get it on every play.
“Sometimes you won’t get it as much as you want to and there’s nothing wrong with being passionate about it. We visited and there’s no animosity between us. It’s kind of like Vegas; what happens on the sidelines stays on the sidelines.”
Sheets was upset he never got the ball when the team was 1st-and-goal from the Calgary five-yard line in the first half and Cortez was made well aware of that.
“I understood what his point was,” Cortez explained. “He wanted the ball more. If we don’t win, we didn’t do the right things whether it’s the throwing game or running game. When you don’t win you question everything you did.”
Cortez was asked if, in hindsight, he should have attempted more running plays with Sheets Saturday night.
“There’s a good chance we’re gonna play Calgary again,” George cautioned. “I’m not going to get into talking about how we’re going to play Calgary.”
As far as Sheets is concerned, the matter has been dealt with.
“We talked about it. It’s handled,” Sheets said. “The situation was done and over with after it was said and done. On the field, we talked about it. It’s over with.”
Sheets said in the end, both parties want the same thing.
“We want to win. We both said the same thing,” Sheets continued. “He said ‘you was just yelling because you want to score the points and help the team out’. And that’s all it really was. It made it look selfish, but that’s not where it was coming from.”
“If a quarterback does that, it’s viewed as he’s leading the team. When a running back does it, it’s viewed as selfish. I’m not a selfish person and everybody knows that. I buy the whole team lunch every time I rush for 100 yards so if anybody wants to call me selfish, you need to look again.”
Meanwhile Rider head coach Corey Chamblin has ruled slotback Chris Getzlaf out for Saturday’s home game against Edmonton due to a knee injury. Quarterback Darian Durant did not practice on Tuesday but Chamblin said no decision has made whether Durant will play against the Eskimos.
I think it was mentioned on this blog…a quote from an '89 Rider speaking of a regular season game against the Eskimos at the end of the season, "that wasn't the game we needed to win" knowing that they'd have to go through Edmonton again in the playoffs. This is a bit of the same situation. You want to win that game against Calgary to have an outside shot at winning the West but you didn't absolutely need to win that game to get into the playoffs. Cortez's quote about having to possibly play Calgary again was interesting. Save your… Read more »
Losing mentality post #1, you play the game to win, and strive to be the best you can be.
PS.
Just ask Mr Kent Austin.
I have not problems with Kory and Cortez going at it. I can guarantee everyone nothing personal was said, it was I want the ball, I can get us a TD. Why not let me try kind of stuff. Having attitude and passion are paramount to success and I think both persons have lots, so lets just let them deal with it and move on. Go Riders
First anon is right, now I'm waiting for the conspiracy theorists & the people who only see the dark side of everything to come on here. Makes for fun reading.
No conspiracy, just truth. The league has bent over backwards the past two title games so as the home team can play and win in front of the home town crowd, thus assuring a vast influx of revenue from every angle for all involved.
You play the game to win the Grey Cup.
Zero games have any playoff implications this week. Do ya think every team will be going all out playing their starters from start to finish to win? Nope. They'll rest key players, accept losing a meaningless game (if it happens) and avoid injury/fatigue in order to win when it matters…the playoffs.
Everyone can reference the Ricky Ray trade as unbelievably and ridiculously pro-Argos. But what did the league do to help BC? I honestly don't remember and ask out of curiosity.
Simple, revenue ! Favorable league courtesy given back to the generous Mr Braley, owner of both BC/Toronto football clubs.
But people can say there were back door dealings between the league/owners/GMs for Toronto to get Ray because there was no way Toronto would make the GC with their QB situation pre-Ray. But how did the CFL ensure BC would be playing at home in 2011?
You answer your very own question with accurate analysis. Please read your opinion, the answer is there.
I don't have as much of a problem with Sheets blowing up as I do with him pouting after the blow up. At least 3 of Darian's sacks were because Sheets missed his block and he did a darn poor immitation of a guy trying.

Good coaching builds good character. Something that the Riders don't have either of.
AGREE 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to anon. #1
cortez is saving plays??? Has he been doing this since Labour Day??
Cortez, or someone from the Riders bench should have kicked Kory Sheets a** right then and there on the sidelines.
The 89 Riders were an anomaly season, an apparition, an oasis that appeared from the nether regions of pro sport existence. The 89 Riders existed in a time when this franchise was a mathematical case study for logistics classes in university math. So, with all due respect, i will probably get my comfort from quotes from another era and culture.
The thing is I agreed with Sheets – not the way he delivered the message (should have been done behind closed doors) but he was only expressing what many of us on here are also saying about Cortez. In that goal line situation he should have just handed off at least once to Sheets…Cortez has been trying too hard and too cute all year in goal line situations. Several times the D has allowed put us in good position early in the game to score a TD and set the tone for the game and Cortez has called bone head… Read more »
"along with the rest of us" ?
Maybe you should challenge Cortez behind closed doors and let us know how that turns out, you are on the team it seems from your comment. Are you on the team ?
"along with the rest of us"?
Ahhh – go back to reading school buddy…I said "along with a lot of us"…
Get your mom to get you another freezee and you will be fine.
