MCCONKEY NAMED RAMS INTERIM HEAD COACH

REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina Rams announced Thursday that Mark McConkey will serve as the program’s acting head coach until the process to find a permanent replacement for departing coach Mike Gibson is completed.
McConkey has been on the coaching staff since last April, when he was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and academic coach. He was a slotback for the Rams from 2007 to 2013, finishing with 180 receptions and 1991 receiving yards in his prolific career.
McConkey holds two degrees from the U of R, receiving a Bachelor of Kinesiology in 2012 with a major in human kinetics and a Bachelor of Education in 2014 with a major in physical education. He was a teacher, head basketball and track & field coach, and assistant football coach at Greenall High School in Balgonie before accepting his current role with the Rams.

McConkey hasn't been on the job for 24 hours and he has already done better than his predecessor.

It is January, the middle of the winter and months away from the football season and the best the U o R could do was name an interim??? What gives?

What can they not do this winter, that they will have to do next winter in searching for a permanent head coach?

Alumni in-fighting and backstabbing runs rampant. McCrystal and Gibson are the winners here. They are out of this mess. The Ram junior glory days are a distant memory. The CIS Rams will forever be doormats and everyone knows that. The will revert to hiring local yokels with the thinnest of resume's and the result will be the same. It's about time that they hired someone the ilk of Blake Nill. Hiring a guy because he's local or has one one low level championship in five years, or he's be a decent high school coach reeks of desperation. It's about time… Read more »

Typical sliders fans to even suggest mueller would leave a pro CFL as a coach to become a off cord in the CIS let alone to come to the loserville province home of the sliders worst team in CFL

This is strictly a formality until they find a coach. He wont even coach a game before they find someone.

McConkey was recommended by McCrystal and Gibson (a coach with NCAA and CFL experience) saw enough potential to hire him with the goal of eventually passing the torch. McConkey may not be ready to take the head coaching job on a permanent basis but classifying him as a 'low calibre' coach is completely asinine. If you think keeping McConkey is a bad move, you're probably reading at an elementary grade level so you'll need a dictionary to look up what asinine means.

Mueller would make more money and advance his career if he did that though… So not sure where you are going with that?
