MEMORIAL CUP: ROUYN-NORANDA 5 WHEAT KINGS 3
RED DEER, Alta. – Timo Meier scored twice as the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-3 on Saturday at the 2016 Memorial Cup.
Anthony-John Greer, Gabriel Fontaine and Philippe Myers also scored for the Huskies. Francis Perron, a 2014 Ottawa Senators draft pick, chipped in with three assists.
Reid Duke, Tyler Coulter and John Quenneville found the back of the net for the Wheat Kings.
Rouyn-Noranda’s Chase Marchand made 38 saves for the win as Brandon’s Jordan Papirny gave up five goals on 29 shots.
The Huskies, the QMJHL champion and No. 1 ranked team in the CHL, are making their first-ever appearance at the Memorial Cup while the WHL champion Wheat Kings are participating for the fifth time in franchise history.
Meier had 23 goals and 51 points in 29 regular season games for Rouyn-Noranda after being acquired mid-season from the Halifax Mooseheads.

I guess the Wheaties have forgotten to eat their Wheaties for the round robin. They are getting spanked at every turn. They are getting destroyed by the eastern teams. Their representation for the West is a little embarrassing. I have no doubt in my mind thatThe Regina Pats would have represented much better. Not saying they would have won the M.C.Just that they probably would have won a game or two and certainly not lost their focus and timingAs well as every other important thing a team needs to have. R.P. Might as well stand for Rest in Peace Wheat… Read more »
The WHL has a lot of hockey to learn from the other two leagues.
Anon 1. You keep thinkin that.
Brandon lost but #17 Quenville had the goal of the entire Memorial Cup. Insane to even try it and even better than he roofed it
Wheatkings have played one game and lost 5 – 3. They outshot the Quebec team 41 – 29. Not sure how losing one game can support the comment "They are getting spanked by eastern teams . " ? And what is the basis that their representation for the West is a little embarrassing? Poster 1 is all around just a stupid post with no rationale for the comments.
Queneville's goal was meaningless. It came with under 10 minutes to go in a 5-2 game. Even he didn't celebrate it after he scored it. If you want to see moves like that, go to any WHL team practice for free. most teams have a couple guys that can do that move.
And yes, the WHL does have much to learn in the processes of recruitment tampering, bribery and league officials looking the other way on under the table deals. The violations Portland got hammered over are just another day in the office out east.
Anon # 1….. Regina Pats couldn't win a game if they were playing for the Beardy Cup. Get a friggin life.
I didn't say Quenville's goal was meaningful in any way. I said it's the goal of the tournament, watch how history unfolds on this.
The goal of the tournament hasn't been determined yet. The goal of the tournament will be meaningful in the outcome of the tourney.
Quenneville will get the award for cutest trick shot.
Brandon is showing their true colors now. They have no business being in the Memorial Cup.
Unbelievable upset tonight by Red Deer over the Quebec rep Rouyn-Noranda!
Brandon has embarrased the WHL so far in two games. Even Red Deer beat the #1 team in Canada from Quebec.
