MENTAL HEALTH PODCAST: NHL GOALIE & BROADCASTER COREY HIRSCH

Former NHL and WHL goaltender – and current Vancouver Canucks broadcaster – Corey Hirsch is our featured guest on the first Pedersen Recovery Podcast of 2019!

The 46-year old Medicine Hat, AB product was a star with the Kamloops Blazers before a great NHL career with stops in Vancouver, New York, Dallas, Washington and Team Canada. I followed his career closely, and it was a treat to finally meet him in Regina some 10 years ago in the living room of our mutual friend Curtis Hunt.

But I was shocked when Corey revealed in a stunning article on the popular sports website The Players Tribune that he’d had a severe battle with Mental Illness and made an attempt on his own life.

That was two years ago, and I was two years into my own Recovery at the time. I immediately felt even more of a kinship with “Hirschy”, and I made a point to connect with him at the time as he was working on Fox Sports Arizona as an analyst on Coyotes broadcasts.

So I wanted to open 2019 with a bang on the podcast and our interview with Corey Hirsch will do just that.

Anxiety and depression are at an all-time high with young people right now – especially in the sports world – so if you or someone you know “isn’t feeling quite right”, you might get something out of this interview.
