COMMENTARY – 40 BURGER
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
They say the best predictor of the future is the past but I’m not certain if they’re referring to life or sports.
Maybe it’s both.
That certainly was the case this weekend in prominent football games we were following the closest.
On Sunday Night Football at MetLife Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys were kicking off the NFL season against the New York Giants. It was the 12th time in history these two teams met in Week 1 and the Cowboys were 10-1 all-time.
Make it 11-1. The Cowboys scored first quarter touchdowns via special teams and defense on the way to a 40-0 rout and earned me a chicken sandwich thanks to a bet with my good buddy Chris Sanford; a staunch Giants fan.
At least, I think he still is today.
And then the same holds true when we flip over to the Canadian Football League.
Just as the Roughriders generally always win the Labour Day Classic, Winnipeg customarily turns the tables in the rematch, known affectionately as the Banjo Bowl.
And did they ever.
The Bombers scored on their opening nine straight possessions on Saturday, on the way to a 51-6 humiliation of the Green Guys. Is that a record?
It upped Winnipeg’s record to 12-7 all-time in the Banjo Bowl and had the Roughriders searching for answers as they get ready to officially enter the home stretch.
If you’re a Rider fan, you should take some solace in the fact that it doesn’t matter if you’re beat 51-6 or 7-6. A loss is a loss no matter how you slice it and sometimes a blowout is actually better because it can serve as a wakeup call.
So now they stand at 6-6.
The Riders were 6-6 last year at this time and never won another game.
That’s the part of history they’d like to change.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Well it’s ok isn’t it, we didn’t think we could win did we? unbelievable! ,sucking this bad is a complete disgrace …. Did the riders sleep the night before, or maybe they drove to Winnipeg saving some money …
Totally agree. I was at the game. Zero effort. If I’m the coach, I’m PISSED OFF!! But no, “we just couldn’t match their intensity”. You did it last week! Dickie’s wet noodle softie coaching approach gives that team permission to take the day off……just like in Montreal.
Even if they make the playoffs, Dickie still has to go
No excuses, when push comes to shove the Saskatchewan Roughriders are not a very good football team and that was on display for all to see in Winnipeg. Don’t know why the Riders fanbase continues to support that mis-management, I guess they are that stupid and gullible to what the organization puts out, continued losing year after year. The Saskatchewan Roughriders on field product reaks to high hell top to bottom as a so called professional sports franchise. All Saskatchewan Roughriders management need to take a walk to the unemployment line, the sooner the better.
settle down Ray, you are a bit hopped up on something I think.
But the jist of what you are saying isnt wrong. Reynolds needs to be fired and a football guy put in his place. A bean counter as the president of a football team doesnt fit, let alone this guy who is a doufus. I like ODay and perhaps he should stay but not 100% sure on that one, I am leaning towards he should stay. Dickey is a good guy but doesnt seem to have a handle on consistency. I think he needs to go.
I can’t listen to ” I thought we had a good week of practise” any longer. You don’t get any points at practise. The time has come to fire Dickie and go interm with Shivers. At seasons end go all out to sign Buck Pierce as our HC.

It is not the lose that angers me, it is the effort. Some of those DBs looked like they gave up on some of those throws from Collaros and the receiver wasnt challenged at all. That is not acceptable. Losing is acceptable if you put in the effort, but the Riders seem to only put in an effort when they want to. That is on the coaching. The riders defense has given up the most points than any other team, including the basement dwellers Edmonton and Ottawa. Dickey better brush up his resume.
