MONDAY COMMENTARY: DON’T GET LEFT BEHIND

What we do here on Mondays on this commentary is recap the weekend, as best we can.
Not sure why but while perusing the sportswire on the news service I subscribe to this morning, I elected to click on the tab that said “ENTERTAINMENT”.
Apparently somebody named Jelly Roll won three trophies at the country music awards Sunday night! I knew a guy with that name once, but he was a rapper. Then I saw an article about rapper Sean “Puffy” Combs being in a whole lotta trouble, and I quickly retreated back to sports.
It’s far safer here.
Although it can be confusing too, with my social media timeline being packed over the weekend with coverage of Wreslemania 40. Apparently it was in Philadelphia? I know because I had plenty of friends there.
But I sure hope they don’t ask me about it! When I was last into pro wrestling, Hulk Hogan was the king of the ring and I had a major crush on Elizabeth.
Apparently things have changed a little since then? I tried to get into rasslin’ during Covid but just could not.
Hey – I respect the heck out of it and see The Rock and Pat McAfee are doing great things in WWE with crowds bigger than ever before. But it still isn’t real, and just still isn’t for the adult me.
Heaven knows there’s enough to keep tabs on in mainstream sports. Just in Toronto alone, the Leafs are home to Pittsburgh on Monday night while the Blue Jays finally hold their home-opener against Seattle this evening after 10 straight on the road to open the season.
You wanna see something scary? Open the American League East standings and you’ll see the Jays are dead-last.
And somehow or another – I’m still trying to find out why – the NCAA womens and mens basketball championships have become a real big deal in Canada.
Caitlin Clark and her Iowa team failed to finish things off Sunday night in the womens final, falling 87-75 to South Carolina. But she leaves as the greatest scorer in college basketball history.
Monday night Toronto product Zach Edey and his Purdue Boilermakers take on Connecticut in the mens final in the home stadium of the Arizona Cardinals.
You gotta keep up with the times don’cha know, lest you get left behind.

Great stuff, and it just shows the world is a turning and changing. JellyRoll – he’s the reason people like myself get satellite radio. It stays locked on Prime Country/Willie’s Road House/90s on 9, No Shoes Radio – and when summer hits it’ll not come off Yacht Rock. JellyRoll is the “country” version of Lizzo. – these are people n.o.t. to be celebrated. Yet, they’ll get all the accolades and atta boys, and body affirmation. The Blue Jays are right where they belong—last.
When every player on a baseball team is in a slump you know it’s coaching and management.
Somewhere along the line John Schneider lost his kajones, he no longer trusts his eyes and makes every decision based on what the analytics department tells him to do plus every BJ bat has went downhill since Don Mattingly took over that department.
I don’t mind Canadians getting into the NCAA but it would be cool if they saved some of that passion for the university basketball teams in their backyard. We have this stuff too…
Love your stuff Rod!! IMO, Canadians are embracing NCAA basketball because of the high profile Canadians playing………. Zach Edey (Purdue), Emanuel Sharp (Houston), and Roxanne Makolo (USC). Aaliyah Edwards, UConn.
NCAA basketball as far as I can remember has been a big deal in Canada. I am not the biggest basketball fan but IMO march madness is some of the best action you will see in all of sports very few of these athletes will go pro it’s one loss your out, they represent college towns not franchises and for most of these athletes this is the end of the line.
