MONDAY COMMENTARY – EAT FRESH

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)

TO THE WINNER GOES THE SUBS.

SUNDAY NIGHT IN THE WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE’S HUB CENTRE IN REGINA, THE BRANDON WHEAT KINGS ROUTED THE PATS 5-1.

IN THE PROCESS, BRANDON CLINCHED FIRST PLACE IN THE STANDINGS WITH THREE NIGHTS TO GO, AND THEY GOT THEIR HANDS ON THE COVETED, INAUGURAL, SUBWAY CUP.

WHAT DOES A JUNIOR HOCKEY PLAYER LOVE MORE THAN A SUBMARINE SANDWICH?

I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING.

KUDOS TO THE WHEATIES, WHO ARE TAKING THE CUP TO MANITOBA, BUT IT’S CAST A BIT OF A PALL OVER THE FINAL FEW DAYS OF COMPETITION.

THE WINNIPEG ICE CAN’T CATCH THEM NOW, AND IT’S RENDERED THE REST OF THE GAMES MEANINGLESS. (NOT THAT THIS WAS THE BIGGEST DERBY SINCE THE CANNONBALL RUN, BUT THERE WAS SOME DRAMA LINING UP FOR WEDNESDAY. HOWEVER THE WHEAT KINGS QUASHED THAT).

AND BY THE WAY, KUDOS TO THEM. AS THE 24-GAME SPRINT WORE ON, BRANDON CLEARLY EMERGED AS NOT ONLY THE MOST-TALENTED TEAM, BUT THE ONE WHO WANTED IT THE MOST.

THE DUB PUNDITS WILL ALSO TELL YOU THAT BRANDON WAS THE TEAM WHO STAYED THE HEALTHIEST, BUT I DIGRESS.

OTHER TEAMS HAVE FADED NEAR THE FINISH LINE; DUE TO INJURIES OR POSSIBLY DISINTEREST.

MOOSE JAW LOST ITS THIRD IN A ROW SUNDAY – 4-2 TO SWIFT CURRENT – AND HAVE LOST SEVEN OF THEIR LAST EIGHT. SASKATOON’S WINLESS IN FOUR AND THAT’S AFTER LEADING MOST OF THE WAY.

THE PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS NEVER DID GET ON TRACK, AND THIS FROM THE DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPIONS. THE PATS STAND FOURTH OUT OF SEVEN TEAMS WITH ONE GAME TO GO AND HAVE TO BE PROUD OF THEIR EFFORTS, PARTICULARLY WHEN CONNOR BEDARD LEFT AFTER ONLY 15 GAMES.

THE TALK IS ALREADY OF NEXT FALL, THE POTENTIAL NEXT RACE, AND IF FANS WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE BUILDINGS.

BUT I’M NOT BITING, JUST YET. LET’S FINISH THIS WEEK STRONG, AND THEN ENJOY ANOTHER SASKATCHEWAN SUMMER ON THE GOLF COURSE AND THE LAKES.

AND OF COURSE, WITH LOTS OF SUBWAY SUBS.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY.
