Monday Commentary: Nothing Lines Up

It’s a topsy, turvy world these days! Hold onto your hat. Here are my thoughts coming out of the weekend …

For starters, not everything lines up, and it likely never will again. The brand new NHL season opened on the weekend with New Jersey sweeping a pair of games against Buffalo in Prague, yet the preseason officially closes tonight with Nashville at Tampa Bay.

Meanwhile the Florida Panthers Stanley Cup ring ceremony planned for tonight has been cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Milton, yet Tuesday’s Panthers home-opener against Boston is to go on as scheduled.

Everybody’s battening down the hatches around here in South Florida but it’s a first for me!

Yet no one seems too worried.

Up north the Roughriders clinched a CFL playoff berth over the weekend with a 28-24 victory at Edmonton, ending a two-year drought.

Cause for mini-celebration, yes, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In a league where 66% of teams make the playoffs, it’s not that major of an accomplishment. To me it’s like graduating high school; you should have your ass kicked if you don’t.

And with the Riders’ difficulty beating teams with above .500 records, the hardest work is still ahead.

Meanwhile there are few things that beat playoff baseball. Are you watching it? Both National League Division Series are tied 1-1 after the Phillies and Padres recorded wins in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

The crowd on their feet for every pitch, you can just feel the nip of Fall in the air while watching on TV.

Those long, slow baseball games don’t seem so long this time of year.

And of course the NFL just keeps chugging along. The story of Week 5 was last-minute endings, upsets of course, and botched plays on special teams.

Again, nothing lines up and I’m getting used to it.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
