Two weeks of the CFL season have gone by and we already have considerable intrigue!

We’ll get to the Jolly Green Giants in a moment but for sure the biggest news coming out of Week 2 is the injury to star Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell in the Tabbies’ 32-14 loss at Toronto.

Bo wasn’t great to begin with – passing for just 158 yards and two picks – but he went down awkwardly in the fourth quarter and left the game. The team announced later it was a “lower body injury”. It looked for all-the-world like an arm or elbow injury, but I’ve told you how much you can believe from the teams these days.

So Hamilton is 0-2 and now without their big money quarterback as they prepare to host Cody Fajardo and the Montreal Alouettes this Friday night.

Speaking of quarterback trickery, the Riders pulled plenty of their own in Week 2 as they kept Trevor Harris out of practice, listed him as a Game Time Decision, then started him in what turned out to be the best game of his life; 411 yards passing and three touchdowns in a 45-27 home loss to Winnipeg.

It took me all weekend to understand why the Rider Nation was so optimistic coming out of a blowout loss like that but I finally get it – if Saskatchewan plays like they did Friday, especially Trevor Harris, they’ll beat most teams in this league.

So we’ll see if that’s true in Week 3 when the Riders visit the Stampeders here in Calgary Saturday night. Contact me directly and we’ll see if we can get you a special rate at our Cowtown home; Hotel Clique Calgary Airport and the adjacent Ace Casino Airport. We’re gonna have a CFL fan reception Friday night in the sports bar and you’re invited!

After years and years, it seems like the CFL is finally getting it together in that they’ve closed off upper sections and are squeezing all the fans into the lower bowl. It looks great on TV and there’s a positive vibe emanating from Canada’s pro football league this year.

Some are still are critical and call it an “Old man’s league” but I don’t mind.

I’m an old man.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
