Of all the wild, whacky and wonderful things that went down in sports this weekend – like the Justin Fields trade, the March Madness bracket being dropped and some great hockey games – the thing I loved the most was the Joey Votto story.

You don’t even have to be a baseball diehard to know this is the biggest story of spring training, by far.

The Jays have signed the 40-year old, six-time All Star and 2010 league MVP as a means to just, “see where it goes”.

And where it went on Sunday was out of the yard as Votto homered on the very first pitch he saw in a Toronto uniform as the Jays went on to tie the Phillies 5-5 in exhibition action in Florida.

Then his day was over. Votto stepped on a bat in the dugout and rolled his ankle, finishing his afternoon. He says he’ll take the day off today with the team and will be good to go on Tuesday.

Is there a better story in sports right now than this?

Votto says he’s wanted to play for the Blue Jays since he first wore a Jays bib, growing up in Toronto.

Having been deemed too old for the Cincinnati Reds rebuild, where he became an all-time franchise great in Ohio, Votto wasn’t ready to hang ‘em up just yet and signed a free agent deal with the Bluebirds on March 9.

Then the fireworks happened on Monday.

Where does it go from here?

Only the baseball gods know for sure, but it’s going to be fun to watch.
