MONDAY COMMENTARY: WHOOPEE!

Death, taxes, and the Dallas Cowboys crapping the bed in the NFL playoffs.

Those are the things you can count on in life, my friends.

I was unusually upset Sunday while the Cowboys were being upset 48-32 by Green Bay in a Wildcard playoff game, and making history in the process.

It was the most points allowed by a Cowboys team in the playoffs in franchise history, and Dallas became the first team to lose to a 7th seed since the playoff bracket was expanded.

Whoopee!

The Packers came out on Sunday and scored on their opening drive, and never let off the gas pedal, building up a 27-0 lead.

It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter that I was getting concerned, but it was apparent all game that the Cowboys just didn’t come to play.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was of course a popular target of the media right after the game and he told them he was floored by the outcome. In all his years in sport, he’s never been so surprised, Jerry said.

Those are troubling words for this Cowboys fan. I’ve been a fan of the Star for almost as long as I’ve been a fan of the Roughriders. That began in Grade 10, in 1988, and just two years later when I moved away for college did I become a fan of America’s Team for the first time.

It was good in the 90’s (being a Cowboys fan, that is) but it’s been hell ever since.

Each year after the Cowboys fall on their face in the playoffs, Jerry Jones is there to say he’s surprised and vows to spend the off-season figuring out what went wrong. And then each July he’s back in his lawnchair at training camp, overseeing the franchise.

And we fall for it everytime.

Rod, I’m a little older than you which makes me a longer fan. I don’t have the all the answers, but will name a couple. Firstly, we don’t have a running back. There were teams that beat us having a good back. That has to be addressed. Up the middle we couldn’t stop the run. Having Diggs gone the entire season was a big blow. Too many blown coverages, turning into monster yards and TDs. Relied too much on Lamb, I do like Ferguson. Need some new blood in that area. I don’t know about Dak. Analysts talked all season… Read more »
