MONDAY OLYMPIC UPDATE

Alex Bilodeau has a knack for making history. Four years ago he won the men's moguls Olympic title for Canada's first gold medal on home soil. Now he's first freestyle skier to repeat as champion after capturing gold again at the Sochi Games.

Alex Bilodeau wasn't the only Canadian on the men's moguls podium. His teammate and rival Mikael Kingsbury won a silver medal. It would have been a Canadian sweep except for a Russian skier winning bronze. Canada's Marc-Antoine Gagnon was fourth.

Charles Hamelin's gold medal could be the first of many. He finished first in the men's 15-hundred metres short-track speedskating event. That's a big step up from his seventh-place finish in the event four years ago in Vancouver. He still has three distances to go.

The three medals move Canada into a tie atop the overall standings with seven. Canada now has three golds, three silvers and one bronze through three days of competition. The Netherlands also has three golds and seven medals, all in speedskating. Norway is there too with seven medals.

It was a bad break for Canada on the first day of men's curling. Brad Jacobs' rink is considered a gold-medal contender. But he barely beat Germany 11-8 before being upset by Switzerland 5-4. Jennifer Jones had no trouble in women's play, leading Canada to a 9-2 win over China.

Canada's women's hockey team needed to work hard for two periods before the breakthrough came against Finland. Jayna Hefford scored and had an assist as Canada beat the Fins 3-0 with a three-goal third-period. Finnish goalie Noora Raty stifled Canada's offence with 39 saves. Canada improves to 2-0 and next plays the US on Wednesday.
