Monday Sports: Canucks Stymie Oilers, Centennial Cup Round-Up

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS (Round 2)

  • Brock Boeser and Elias Lindholm each scored twice, and rookie netminder Arturs Silovs made 42 saves, as the visiting Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Sunday to grab a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven NHL playoff series. J-T Miller and Quinn Hughes each had two assists. Mattias Ekholm, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard scored for the Oilers, who host Game 4 on Tuesday.
  • The visiting Florida Panthers spotted the Boston Bruins a 2-0 lead, then scored three unanswered goals to record a 3-2 win on Sunday and grab a commanding 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven N-H-L playoff series. Anton Lundell, Sam Bennett and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers. David Pastrnak and Brandon Carlo scored for the Bruins, who played without injured captain Brad Marchand. Game 5 is set for Tuesday in Florida.
  • There are two NHL playoff games tonight, including one at Madison Square Garden in New York where the Rangers can eliminate the visiting Carolina Hurricanes with a win. The Rangers lead the second-round, best-of-seven series 3-1. In Denver, the Colorado Avalanche will be aiming to level their series at 2-2 when they host the resilient Dallas Stars.

MLB

  • Alek Manoah had his best start of the season, allowing three runs — all unearned — over seven innings but his Toronto Blue Jays fell to the visiting Minnesota Twins 5-1 on Sunday. Manoah gave up four hits and a walk but struck out six. It was Manoah’s second start after he began the year on the injured list with shoulder soreness. The Twins won two of three games in the weekend series.

 

NBA

  • Nikola Jokic scored 35 points and Aaron Gordon chipped in with 27 as the visiting Denver Nuggets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 115-107 on Sunday in Minneapolis to tie the best-of-seven NBA Western Conference semifinal series at 2-2. Canadian Jamal Murray also had 19 points for the winners. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 44 points. Game 5 is Tuesday in Denver.
  • Tyrese Haliburton scored 20 points, T-J McConnell added 15 and the Indiana Pacers rolled to their third-biggest post-season victory ever, beating the visiting New York Knicks 121-89 on Sunday to even the Eastern Conference semifinal series at 2-2. The Pacers led by 43 points during a start-to-finish romp. Game 5 of the series is Tuesday in New York.
  • CHICAGO (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks won the NBA draft lottery, landing the No. 1 pick and a potential cornerstone player in a year where there’s no clear-cut choice. The Hawks hit the jackpot despite just 3% odds after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference at 36-46. The draft is June 26-27 in Brooklyn.
