MONDAY SPORTS PAGE: LIONS PUMP ALOUETTES

The BC Lions scored 17 points in the second quarter and never looked back as they defeated the visiting Montreal Alouettes 35-19 in CFL action on Sunday in Vancouver. The Lions improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Alouettes slipped to 2-2. Shaun Shivers scored a touchdown in his Lions’ debut and quarterback Vernon Adams Junior threw for 283 yards and one touchdown.

Nathan Lukes’ R-B-I double in the 10th inning helped the Toronto Blue Jays finish off an unlikely 4-3 comeback victory over the Detroit Tigers. The Jays trailed 3-1 with two out in the ninth, but Matt Chapman walked and Danny Jansen hit his 11th homer to tie the game. Yimi Garcia pitched an inning of relief and earned the victory, while Jordan Romano recorded his 26th save.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected power-hitting shortstop Arjun Nimmala as their top pick in Sunday’s baseball’s amateur draft. The 17-year-old Nimmala, from Strawberry Crest High School in the Tampa, Florida region, was picked 20th overall. The six-foot-one, 170-pound athlete bats right, throws right and is regarded one of the top hitters in his age group. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected hard-throwing L-S-U right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes with the Number 1 overall pick.

For the third time in history a Naylor brother took the honour of being the first Canadian selected in the M-L-B amateur draft after the Oakland Athletics selected third baseman Myles Naylor of Mississauga, Ontario 39th overall on Sunday. The reigning Junior national team M-V-P joins brothers Josh and Bo as players to achieve the honour.

Canada gave the United States a huge scare in Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match in Cincinnati, but the host country rallied with a last-minute, stoppage-time goal before winning 3-2 on penalties. Canada went ahead 2-1 in the 109th minute on a Jacob Shaffelburg goal, but Canada surrendered its own goal five minutes later to force the shootout. The U-S advances to play Panama on Wednesday.

Canada bounced back from a tough Saturday semifinal loss to the U-S at the Women’s AmeriCup basketball tournament in Leon, Mexico, to beat Puerto Rico 80-73 in Sunday’s third-place final. The Canadian squad was led by Nirra Fields with 19 points, while Kayla Alexander had 13 points and 19 rebounds and Shay Colley scored 15 points. Brazil upset the U-S 69-58 in Sunday’s championship final.
