MONDAY SPORTS PAGE: ELKS SNAP THE STREAK!
CFL
The losing streak that set football futility records and refused to end is finally over. The Edmonton Elks defeated the visiting Ottawa Redblacks 30-20 on Sunday in a battle of last-place CFL squads. The Elks snapped a 22-game home losing skid that dated back to 2019. It was also the second straight win for the 2-and-9 Elks, who upset the host Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-10 last week. The Redblacks, who have lost five straight, slipped to 3-and-8.

Houston rookie C.J. Stroud threw his first touchdown as a pro before being named the Houston Texans’ starting quarterback to open the regular season. Meanwhile, Jimmy Graham looked determined not to let his mysterious medical episode and run-in with police last week derail his NFL comeback with the New Orleans Saints.
Stroud’s short touchdown pass to Nico Collins helped the Texans defeat the Saints 17-13 on Sunday night in the preseason finale for both teams.

It was a high-flying affair on Sunday.
Just before kickoff, a trio of professional skydivers landed at centre field. While the Regina Thunder trailed 14-0 early, they rallied through the air with Carter Moberg throwing for 402 yards and 4 touchdowns (182 yards and two touchdowns to the speedy Isaiah Woodley). The Thunder beat the Winnipeg Rifles 45-21 on Sunday.
The team heads into the bye week but returns to face the rival Saskatoon Hilltops at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday September 9, 2023.
Meanwhile the Saskatoon Hilltops clubbed the Calgary Colts 50-18 to go to 3-0.

Hovland didn’t flinch under a relentless challenge from Xander Schauffele (Zan-der shao-fil-eh). Hovland closed with a 7-under 63 for a five-shot victory. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B-C finished 25th at 2 under, 25 shots behind the winner.
MLB
Kole Calhoun hit a tie-breaking two-run double followed by Ramon Laureano’s two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Cleveland Guardians edged the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 on Sunday. The Guardians won two of three in the weekend series. Jays shortstop Bo Bichette left the game after five innings with a tight right quadriceps ailment. Third baseman Matt Chapman departed after the sixth with a swollen right middle finger. The Jays are now two-and-a-half games out of an A-L wild-card playoff berth.
