MOOSE JAW 8 REGINA 5

The Regina Red Sox lost a chance to grab sole possession of third place in the Saskatchewan Division as they dropped an 8-5 extra inning decision to Moose Jaw Tuesday night.

Left-handed pitching ace Tommy Lay gave Regina a chance to win with a sparkling seven inning performance. He allowed just one earned run, while scattering seven hits and fanning four of the 32 Moose Jaw batters he faced.

Mike Thill, who came on in relief, got some great defensive help from middle infielders Gabriel Montero and Geoff Seto in the eighth inning to squash Moose Jaw’s first comeback attempt.

The Regina lead evaporated as closer Louis Cohen was whacked for three Moose Jaw runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, 5-5. The bullpen combination of Jeremy Sylvester and Kendal Daniels pitched in the 10th inning giving up three more runs.

At the plate, Gabe Snyder put on a big show going two for four with two RBIs and a run scored. Brandon Vaughn, the senior from Northern Colorado, had a hit, a walk and scored two of the Red Sox five runs.

Over 650 Red Sox faithful filled the stands at Currie Field to watch the entertaining ball game that ended with Regina’s 21st loss of the season.

The Express and Red Sox will renew acquaintances on Thursday night when Regina travels to Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw for a rematch.
