MOSAIC PLACE RECAP: LIONS 26 ROUGHRIDERS 13

REGINA (CP) – Andrew Harris gave the B.C. Lions exactly what they were looking for – a boost and a win.

Harris provided a spark Saturday night and the Lions defence pitched a second-half shutout in a 26-13 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium.

Harris racked up 203 total yards and scored one touchdown to lift the Lions (1-2), who had been playing with a listless offence the first two weeks of the season, to their first win. The Riders, meanwhile, have lost two straight and share the same record heading into their bye week.

“I think the confidence is building with our offensive line and we were embarrassed last week (in Montreal) and so we really came back with a vengeance tonight,” said Harris. “We have to build off of this now and take this confidence and go forward with it.”

The all-star running back racked up 145 total yards in the first half, including 94 yards along the ground. His 58-yard run for a touchdown late in the first quarter gave the Lions an 11-0 advantage and was the team’s lone major in the opening two quarters. Harris finished the night with 132 yards rushing and 65 receiving, both of which were team highs.

“This was a character win more than anything,” Harris said.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn, who had thrown six interceptions in his first two games with the Lions, played turnover-free football on Saturday. He completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 170 yards and one touchdown.

Glenn’s 20-yard touchdown strike to Courtney Taylor midway through the fourth quarter gave the Lions a 26-13 lead and sent the majority of the 32,864 spectators scrambling for the exits.

“It’s hard to come in here and get a win,” Lions linebacker Solomon Elimimian said. “They had a great crowd here and that’s the kind of crowd you want to play in front of. It’s just a you against the world kind of feeling and it makes you depend even more on that guy next to you, trust in your teammates even more.”

Quarterback Darian Durant and Roughriders’ offence struggled for much of the night. Durant completed just 15 of 34 pass attempts for 191 yards.

“We were 0-2 and no one gave us a shot to win this game,” Elimimian said. “We knew a lot of times what (the Riders) were trying to do. The biggest thing with Durant is containing him a he’s the main cog in that offence and we got some hits on him tonight and that slowed him down.”

The Riders held a brief 13-11 lead late in the second quarter after Durant hooked up with receiver Taj Smith on a five-yard touchdown pass and catch. But after Hugh Charles lost a fumble on the Riders’ next possession, Paul McCallum kicked a 41-yard field goal, one of three on the night, to give the Lions a 14-13 advantage going into the half.

Saskatchewan’s Chris Milo made two field goals, also in the second quarter.

“I’m disappointed,” Durant said after the game. “I thought we would come out and put on a better performance than what we did. But you have to give B.C. a lot of credit. They came in here and took it to us.”

The Roughriders are off until Saturday, July 26 when they host Dwight Anderson and the Toronto Argonauts.

Durant was not at his best by any means and that is why we got our butts kicked tonight. If Chamblin keeps benching these guys every time they make a mistake they might just turn on him and that would be so costly.

Catastrophe is what this team is. Everywhere on the field. Welcome to last place in be West. A nice donated win to the BC Lions. Where does one even begin to fix this catastrophe!

Vanilla offense. No imagination at all. One first down in the second half? One yard total offense in the entire 3rd quarter?
One would have thought after being embarrassed by Toronto the Riders would have come out fired up. Does anything work anymore?
Seems to me the Riders played poorly last year when Sheets was gone. They need to find his replacement quickly or we can kiss this season adieu.

Well the Rider haters are out and let them have their fun. So the Riders aren't the Grey Cup Champions of July (to quote the great Terry Vaughn).Put it in perspective. Four of our six offence skill players are brand new. It is going to take some time to look like what we were used to with Getz, Dressler, Simon and Sheets. If anyone thought we would start 5-0 like last year, they were not being realistic. It's a long season. Now is the time to figure things out and get it right. I am disappointed but not worried. One thing positive to take away from the game is the development of a future star receiver – rookie Ryan Smith, a play maker for sure!

Wow, if the Riders are going to play like this when it is nice weather today and last week, then lets have rain storms and what not for Rider games.

Yup, vanilla offence simply because of all the new receivers…it's going to take time. They aren't going to "gel" overnight.

Patience is a key!

Place the blame on Chamblin. Our running game is moving in the first half and yes Charles fumbled but benching him for that. NO! 2nd straight week Chamblin has cost us a game because of his ego. WAKE UP!!

Tristan Jackson….what's the point of a defensive player who doesn't want to make contact with the ball carrier? Nice bail on that long TD.

Our O-line must believe the newspaper clippings. DD should have been sacked a dozen times but he is hard to bring down. As far as opening holes for the running game. What holes? The whole O-line sucked, come to think of it everybody but Taj Smith sucked.

Well the fans showed up. Too bad the players and coaches didn't. Instead of shaking up the roster I think it's time to make some coaches accountable.

Wow! Relax folks. For rebuilding teams this is still ex season. And this IS a rebuilding team. The jury should stay out for another 5-6 games.

We better find another Khari Jones for DD so he gets his head straight. He does not trust any of the new receivers out there. Since the Riders are paying him for this year anyways, pull Geroy Simon out of retirement, so DD can throw to someone he knows will catch the ball.
